Help! My Garmin is Stupid!

I am trying to download Europe maps which I have purchased. I have followed all their step-by-step instructions, and when it comes to the actual act of downlaoding, the website finds the Garmin, but not its supplemental memory card. So, it thinks my Garmin lacks space for this download. Have others had similar experiences? And, what might I try to get around this? HELP!!!

Some FYIs: a) When the memory card is mated directly into my PC, Garmin does not find it. But! (b) The Garmin website finds two fictitious devices connected to other drives (both of which it thinks are too small, too!)

Hve you tried re-formatting the card? Is there a toggle in the Garmin setup menu that turns access to the card on and off?

I too have a Garmin and the interface is certainly crap.

Mine is an Oregon 550t and cost like $500 bucks. It had some internal memory, but not enough to store all the maps I needed, so I had to buy an additional card. I couldn’t tell from your description if you have a removable storage card in your device. If you didn’t purchase one and put it in yourself I doubt you do.

Second, there are different types of Mirco SD cards, and mine wouldn’t take anything above 2GB (Edit: or 4? I can’t remember. It wouldn’t accept a “HD” type). If the device won’t recognize the card check to make sure it is compatible.

Finally, I believe the way I updated my device was by having the entire unit (that is, device + SD card) connected to the computer. My system found two external devices, and the software was smart enough to know what to do.

Sorry I can’t be of more assistance. It is tough without knowing the exact particulars.

I was also going to ask if the card is larger than 2GB. Cards larger than that use a different format called SDHC, and not all devices support this.
