Help my son with his itchy tongue!

My son has been having a problem with intermittent itching on the tip of his tongue. It isn’t all the time - he’s only complained of it on a couple of occasions - but it’s clearly misery. It keeps him up at night and he’s been reduced to tears. We tried simply numbing it with Orajel, but that didn’t give more than temporary relief; numbing it with an ice cube feels good but the benefit is gone as soon as the ice is gone.

When it happens, usually he’s back to normal by the next morning, and stays fine for several days to a week before it happens again. We even went to the doctor for a checkup and mentioned it to her, but naturally it wasn’t happening when we went. The doc looked at his tongue and didn’t see anything amiss.

I examined his tongue tonight and saw kind of a white patchy appearance. Mrs. Chef says that to her it looks more clusters of tiny white bumps, kind of like tastebuds only white. It’s not all over, just on the tip and a little one the side. I suspect he’s been grinding his tongue against his teeth to “scratch” it, and making it worse.

If anyone out there has any suggestions on causes or treatment, lay it on me. I can’t take the whimpering anymore, and my son is making a lot of noise too.

IANAD. This is not meant as medical advice or diagnosis.

See your doctor. Ask about “thrush.” Also check into food allergies.

Alergies or thrush a yeast infection. An infection anywhere in his body could also produce itching and swelling. Take a picture when it occurs and take him to the doctor. A food allergy could be worse next time. Watch for swelling.

I know someone who would have that, she would clamp onto it w/ a tweasers and pull it off the tongue. It would prodce a sharp pain, but it seemed to fade fast, maybe a little bleeding.

If they were taste buds, that would explain why she likes very hot and spicy foods, she must be running out of them.

Change out his tooth brush. He very well could be reinfecting his tongue with yeast when he brushes his teeth.
