Every once in a while, maybe once a year, I get a small bump on the tip or edge of my tongue that itches and bothers the hell out of me. I’m urged to scratch it on my teeth, but that hurts like hell. They go away in a few days. This has been happening since I was a little kid so I know it’s nothing serious. I have no idea what causes them. Does this happen to anyone else? Is there a way of getting rid of them?
I’ve been told they’re infected taste buds.
My advice would be to see a dentist or an oral surgeon. I’ve survived four surgeries for oral cancer and it ain’t no fun to have your tongue sliced and diced. Its cheap insurance to have a pro check it out.
I get the same things, I’ve always called them tongue pimples which I guess is relatively accurate if they are infected taste buds. I always end up scratching it again my teeth in the vain hope that it will pop or be rubbed off and the annoyance will stop.
I’ve always assumed that they were just some sort of tongue blister.
I wonder about that too. I used to get them from time to time and thought it was a reaction to me eating pineapple.
Inflamed fungiform papilla. Also known as “lie bumps.”
They go away on their own, but they sure are annoying until they do. They can hurt, they can itch, sometimes they don’t feel bad at all but you always notice they are there.
You’re not supposed to do anything to them, just leave them alone. That said, I’ve had really bad ones before that I shamefully admit I, ummm, removed (tweezer yank). Hurts like a bitch, but the pain went away after I removed it.
However, since then, I’ve learned/realized that you only have so many tastes buds, so removing any via home surgery is probably not an ideal treatment for something that is just a nuisance.
If it doesn’t go away in a few days, see a dentist/doctor, or just ask them the next time you see them. These are very common so I can’t imagine it ever being cancer, but hey, some people get paranoid.
I think that’s it. They annoy the crap out of me and it sucks that there’s nothing you can do about them. I can hardly feel this one anymore though so I guess it’s as good as gone.
Some dentists have a laser that can burn some such things out if you catch them before they get to far advanced.
The dentist in our community who does this had her ad under cosmetic dentistry in the yellow pages,
Yes, this happens to my as well. also since i was a little kid, as long as i could remember. i get it once every few months and it lasts for about a week. im am also urged to scratch it with my teeth. it usually starts out as 1 bump on the edge or tip.(always around the edge). once i keep biting and scratchin it gets irritated. a few more bumps will appear and it hurts more. waking up in the mourning is the worst. i actually have it right now. the only medicine that has helped me is called “Kanka+”. it can be found in walgreens or cvs in the oral care section. always right next to the ambasol. it has a blue cap and its liquid. dont get the white tube. how ever the pain relief is only momentarily. please get back to me. pretty sure theres nothing we can do.. ive ben trying for ever
