As my unemployment status grinds on into its fourth month, I need to entertain myself. So far, I’ve finished Doom3, Half-Life (Platinum), Medal of Honor, and Half-Life 2.
What else is good in the FPS genre?

There’s Star Trek: Voyayer:Elite Force, which is a rather good FPS with a fairly interesting plot. It’s a bit short, but good while it lasts. There’s also a sequel, that I haven’t got.
Max payne isn’t a FPS, but is an action game. It’s rather good, although I don’t think it’s the classic that some people think it is. It’s sort of a cross between the action of the Matrix, and John Woo, and a sort of parody of film noir. Again there is a sequel out.
Also the Grand Theft Auto series are not FPS (I don’t think), but are actions games. You can get the first two free from the Rockstar games website, although the last time I tried I couldn’t get through, so it might be as well to buy them.
The first one is really good for getting the adrenaline pumping, and the second one seems similarly good. I can’t really comment on GTA3 and it’s sequels, as I’ve not played them, although they do seem to have a good reputation.
Also you might like Deus Ex, a rather more plot based FPS, set in the near future, full of sinister organisations and conspiracies. I didn’t really get on with it myself, but it seems to have quite a following, and you should be able to pick it up cheaply.
System Shock 2 is the only FPS you need. It’s not a strict shooter like Doom, but its other puzzle and RPG elements make it probably the best computer game (any genre) that I’ve played.
If you’re willing to venture into somewhat foreign territory, Morrowind is many many hours of entertainment. It’s an RPG instead of a shooter, but it’s first-person. I enjoyed the heck out of it, playing all the way through twice.
I’ll second the recommendation for System Shock 2 – great game.
If you like fast-paced action more than suspenseful, story-driven stuff, then Far Cry may be the ticket. Also, Halo is available for PC, and is simple FPS goodness with a cool story.
