You guys are right, I am not a car expert. And that is why the OP was labeled “Help,” though the post was rather smart-ass in tone, admittedly.
In any case, I think I might get the Subaru Tribeca as my next car, as I could use the hauling room and need a bigger car for my bigger family. I think the styling is quirky but pretty cool, and the interior is a true work of art.
Maybe an RX-8 as a fun car when I can really afford it. That Saab of Sam’s also sounds great.
Sam, you are right that the car tech out there is amazing. Quality is better than ever. I just wish the predominant styling had a bigger fantasy factor and were a little more to my taste.
Just get a DeLorean. Buy a gold-plated one, buy a regular one and replace the V6 with a gas turbine engine, get one that’s made up to look like the one from Back to the Future, whatever.
I can’t resist. I feel compelled to respond to -every- car thread, but I can often talk myself out of it.
I am not historically a car geek. Have been driving utilitarian mini-vans and pick-up trucks.
HOWEVER:
Just wanted to chime in that I get happy and contented any time I drive our 2005 Subaru Legacy GT Limited sedan. I love the apparent build quality, the responsiveness of the engine (250 hp turbo-charged intercooled horizontally opposed engine) , AWD, tight steering, ABS all around, air bags all around, the heated leather seats, 6-cd stereo (with optional subwoofer), dual-zone climate control, and all the other gee-gaws. I think it looks nice too.
The Saab that Sam Stone has sure looks good too (exterior and specs), but there are even fewer Saab dealers than there are Subaru dealers (at least around these parts). In our immediate case, a Subaru dealer is only 1 mile away.
The downside? Same downside for many smaller cars. Where to put your stuff if taking a road trip. Like I said, we had been accustomed to driving mini-vans and pickups, so this is a bit of a change. That and I just -know- I’m going to get a speeding ticket, since there seems to be the ability to rapidly accelerate from any given speed
Just as a point of note, the Saab 9-2 is actually a Subaru Impreza Turbo/WRX under Saab badgework. The interior and options may be a bit different but the mechanicals are all Seven Sisters-built.
And yeah, the Legacy GT is a “poor man’s” Audi S4; honestly, comparing reliability and build quality, I’d take the Subaru any day of the week.
Look for an older car that you once though was cool. I did that once and bought a spruced up 10 year old Thunder Bird. It was only a fraction of a new car in price, but since it has been repainted and had new tires, brakes, etc. it was really a cool car. People always assumed I had bought it new 10 years ago, and had really taken care of it, so it was kind of a status symbol. Of course, I don’t drive much, so there were few problems related to old cars. If you drive a lot you wouldn’t want something headed for maintenance.
I think it’s been established we’re feeding a troll here, but I’d like to inject a little reality.
I’m a Corvette guy, I own a couple and hang with folks that own pretty much every year. When you say the 63’ is the bestest thing ever, I know you’re looking through some really rosy glasses. Is it pretty? yeah. Is it practical? Not a chance. They overheat, have to deal with vapor lock and all the other things Carburetors bring to the table. Dija get Drum brakes? More than likely. and you have NO IDEA of fun til you get it over 80…see that cool design did a pretty good job approximating a wing, and the steering gets pretty light up there.
So, open a thread, call everything shite, then expect help? We can’t even get a bead on your tastes.
If you REALLY want acceleration, power and handling, but a shifter kart.
Sweet Jebus, if the Tribeca is something you think looks cool (instead of hideous), I’ll just bow out of this thread right now. Ugh, that thing is horrid.
Lucky you. You’re in a good position not to blow endless money on stupid car obsessions.
Get one that runs. If a car can take you to wherever you want to go, it is approximately as good as any other car that can do that. Most cars can go all the same places. If a car isn’t reliable it is out of the race, eh?
Get one that can carry whatever you need to carry.
Those filthy car makers have gone way too far, gotten way too greedy. Look at their damn commercials, like Volkswagen commercials - do they have a hundred psychologists on staff, or what? They pitch understanding of you, your own uniqueness, your youness. What they understand is that they can peel money out of underfunded young people for fairly unreliable cars with this angle. Not as bad as when they enslaved Jews, but not as far as we’d like to see them come, either.
There’s a zillion things better to do with several tens of thousands of dollars. I have every confidence that you can think of a whole bunch of nice ones.
That’s your opinion. Personally, I would say to Aeschines that I’m glad he’s looking for a car that will be exciting for him, rather than settling for some bland piece-of-shit econobox because it can “go all the same places.”
Just because you don’t see any point to cars and/or driving beyond transportation, doesn’t mean that none exists. You may not care about the difference between a Kia Rio and a BMW (or Ferrari), but some of us do. Safety, comfort, power, handling, looks, sound, and so forth. In my opinion, that’s worth the premium.
Spending extra money on a sports or luxury car is no different from spending it on nice furniture, nice clothing, new electronics, or a big house. You have no basis to call everyone in this thread stupid simply because they spend their discretionary income differently than you.
Oh, this is rich. You’re saying that Volkswagen is evil and greedy because their commercials are too good? What kind of crap is that? Do you have no concept of personal responsibility? Volkswagen is not forcing anyone to buy their cars. If someone old enough to be buying a new car is still so naive and easily-influenced that they’ll buy a Volkswagen solely because of one of these Evil Nazi Commercials, without doing any further research, they deserve to get fleeced.
Oh, this is just wonderful. I’m curious, are you aware that you’re a racist?
[Moderator Underoos on]No, what’s been established is that calling someone a troll on this board is a big no-no, and that if you want to bitch you should take it to The BBQ Pit.[/Moderator Underoos on]
