Help required editing digital videos

Hi all,
I am in charge of videoing/editing/producing a DVD of my church’s services.
I am using a Sony Handy-cam (until we can do better) but the software that came with it sucks as far as editing goes. I have also tried Power Producer, windows movie maker (I really like this but I keeps crashing my computer)and Avidemux and am not happy with any of them.
At the moment unless i am behind the camera we usually end up with 5-6 individual videos (due to copyright confusions we are not taping songs/music), that need to be trimmed and merged together. I also want to have titles and credits (and explanations of missing bits: see what I said about music earlier).
Out of all this I want to end up with some sort of quality DVD we can give to shut ins and the folks at the nursing home.

So if anyone would like to suggest some sort of no cost/low cost/costly but worth it video editing software I would be much grateful

As you’re after something a little more advanced than just shoving clips together, I would suggest the very reasonably priced Sony Vegas.

I have downloaded the trial version of Vegas movie studio but would like more suggestions before I go shelling out my dosh.
I really like the Windows movie maker but if I try to load anything like a large file it crashes my computer (mind you this has not happened with any of the other programs I have tried - I have been using honking great files without a murmur of protest from my computer - I wonder what gives?).

Windows Movie Maker is a POS, which is why it crashes all the time. I suggest hitting Ctrl + S everytime you do anything.
