Hi. Thanks for clicking here. I’m seeking some assistance from LOTR uber-geeks with a knowledge of Tolkein languages.
Now, I’ve done a little reading myself - enough to know that I’m going to need the help of a real expert, alpha-geek.
What I’m trying to do is to convert a few English words into Angerthas. No, I do not mean Khuzdul. There aren’t enough Khuzdul words to affect a direct translation, or I’d be working on learning it the way some people have learned Quenya.
So what I’m trying to do is to select characters from the Angerthas diagram in the Appendices of LOTR, and assign them in order to produce the same sounds as the English words.
Here’s what I’ve got so far:
The (10,46) meaning that I think the characters listed in the diagram as numbers 10 and 46 would produce the sound “the,” likewise:
warrior (5,48,29,47,50,29)
a toughie: it seems that there is no “w” sound, so I guessed that the “hw” sound of #5 would be closest
is (39,35)
shield (15,47,46,31,9)
his (21, 39, 35)
of (50,4)
people (1, 47, 1, 42, 31)
knight (22, 40, 8)
mirror (6, 42, 29, 50, 29)
So, given what you know of the chart, plus the way phonetic signs work, how close am I, and more important, what corrections are necessary?
Oh, and I realize this may be a vain hope, but would you at least label the funny attempts to work off-color words into your response? If you want to work up the epic poem “A King of Elves There was of Old…” go ahead, just not on this thread, OK?
Thanks. I appreciate the help.
