What am I missing with the punchline? Is it a play on words, or is Satchel just stringing together elements of Bucky Katt from the strip?

I am unable to enlighten you on this matter. I, too, am puzzled.

It’s a play on words.

He’s throwing things, and there were 50 of them, so he’s a Throw-50, not a Catch-22, and he’s a jerk, not just a moron, and he’s carbon based, not oxygen-based, so he’s not an Oxymoron. To Satch’s mind, anyway.

And I think Satch’s more right that Rob, here. Bucky’s not internally contradictory - he’s just a jerk, and there’s no expectation he not be - so he’s not an oxymoron, and the whole throwing peanuts, but not liking them thrown back thing isn’t really a Catch-22 type trap.

Poor Satchel. He really does get so provoked sometimes. I usually take the side of the cat in most things, but Bucky just makes me mad too!

I too sense there is a pun being made here that I am missing.

It’s just misdirection, Nemo. There’s no pun to be found. But I understand the impulse to ferret one out, as Satchel does like to put them up. If it weren’t for the fact that Satchel’s confusion with idiomatic expressions is such a stitch, this strip would be Darby Conley’s Cow Tools.

You’re not humor-impaired–the cartoonist is.

Conley’s punchline is “He’s a throw-50 carbon jerk!” and it’s not supposed to be a pun? That’s a lot worse than the lamest possible pun would have been.

And I’m somebody who thought “cow tools” was actually pretty funny.
