Help with Quotes/Lyrics

HELP!

I am writing a thank you note for the paper, to thank those who helped my mother in law in the last months of her life, and created two beautiful memorial services for her. I am trying to remember either (or both!) of the quotes below:

** you can judge a man by his friends **
or something like that? The point is,if you have great friends, you’re probably great too.

** (Beatles Lyric) the love you take is equal to the love you make **
Where’s Pepper when you need her? Does anyone else know whether I’ve got that one right?

** other suggestions? **
I’m trying to make the point that to my mother-in-law, her friends were her life, and she treasured them. They made her life worthwhile and her death more bearable. They are an amazing group of people! Any other quotes about the value of friends?

The song is The End by the Beatles, on Abbey Road.

I can’t find any cites for the first quote, unfortunately.

Good luck with the speech.

You got the Beatles quote right!

One quote about friends that I like is from the movie *It’s A Wonderful Life." I don’t know if I’m quoting it right, but it’s something like “no man is poor who has friends.” I’ll put my tape in tonight & find it, if you want!

The quote you’re thinking of is “The true measure of a man is the friends he keeps.” A great saying, but you’ve stumped me on the originator. I checked the web. I found it in use on several pages, but they all started out, “There’s an old saying that says,” or “There’s an old proverb that says…” So, I checked a proverb encyclopedia that I have, and it’s in there. But it’s more a collection of proverbs, so it doesn’t have its origins. Sorry I couldn’t help more. I did find some other quotes about friendship that I thought were nice, though:

Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.Anais Nin

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art…it has no survival value; rather, it is one of those things that give value to survival.C. S. Lewis

To have a good friend is one of the highest delights in life; to be a good friend is one of the noblest and most difficult undertakings.Anonymous

I hope this can help you out in writing your note.

BTW, that Beatles quote is especially poignant because it was the last thing they ever recorded together (remember, Abby Road was recorded after Let it Be).

Thanks for the great suggestions. Here is the note in its entirety, for those of you with morbid curiousity:

The family of the late ____________ would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the many friends and extended family who have helped us through her illness and passing. A special thanks to those who contributed to two very touching and beautiful memorial services. To all her caregivers, helpers, loyal servants and raisers of spirits – you made her life worthwhile and her death more bearable. You will always be in our hearts.
