I completely agree on the “probably innocent” thing (“ask her” is my answer to the OP as well), but don’t underestimate the ability a lot of kids have to blindly assume that their adult relations are internet illiterate.
I remember when my baby sister was in her teens (she’s seven years younger than me) and she and her mates started properly using the internet for social stuff (myspace, msn etc). After a while I had to email her and gently remind her that i could read/see pretty much everything she was writing.*
She was shocked - she’d just assumed that the internet was “her place” - not that of her parents and/or elder brother - despite the fact that she knew I was a web developer!
*put it this way, i knew when she’d completely discovered boys long before our parents did, if you catch my drift.
The thing is though, with IMs usually (not sure aobut MSN) both parties have to mututally add each other in order to be able to view status messages and such, so she would presumably know that threnodyangelfire had her screen name and therefore could see her status. Though this wouldn’t be the first time I’ve underestimated the penchant for doing completely illogical things my peers seem to possess.
Never underestimate the “oh they’ll never notice/understand that” factor.
Anyone here on facebook and have young relatives? Take a quick look at your friends list and I guarantee you’ll find at least one with either a status message or some stuff on their wall that tells you far more than you wanted to know about them!
Absolutely. Look how many of us didn’t know what it meant, and I didn’t have a clue myself until a teenager explained it in very simple terms. I’m not even all that old, but I don’t follow the current slang.
