Help writing a covering letter

Hi everyone

I am looking to move from the UK to the US to be with my sweetheart and as such, I am looking for a job. I was hoping that some of you smart people may be able to give me a little advice and answer a couple of questions.

  1. Does anyone have any general advice on applying for overseas jobs from the UK?

2)Does anyone know of any good employment agencies who deal specifically with foreign nationals? If so, do you think they are a good idea?

  1. I don’t know what to do about contact information in my cover letter. Should I list my girlfriend as a US contact, giving her name and address, or should I just say that I am moving to the US and give just my UK contact information? If I do include her name and contact information, do I say just that she is my US contact, or do I call her my finance? (She isn’t, but that might change.)

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me. It is a minefield, this looking for work overseas.

Rick

You said ‘…do I say just that she is my US contact, or do I call her my finance? (She isn’t, but that might change.)’
(bolding mine)

I think you meant fiancee.

Hmmmmm…glee, as the woman in question, maybe I should think about this…

OK, here’s one thing I wish somebody had told me before I started looking for work in the UK. (Apologies if you know this already.)

Resume / cv formats differ from country to country. Find a good sample of the US type, copy it slavishly, and get an American (preferably somebody with no knowledge of UK English or cultural differences) to check it for errors and usage that may be confusing.

More specifically, don’t include your birthdate or age; American employers are barred by law from taking this information into account when they hire people, so they’ll just have to blank it out anyway.

BTW, is this one of those situations where you have to have a job to get a visa, but you have to have a visa to get a job? Good luck.

The following site has cover letter info.:

monster.com might have info. for the other Qs. Good luck!

RickQ, don’t hesitate to email me a copy of your CV and cover letter. I’ll be glad to assist in whatever way I can with my editing skills.
