OK, I tried this before on the wrong board, so I just try it again. Apologies for cross posting, but I need some help. Since most of the members on this board are American, I hoped you could spend a few minutes and give some advise. I’m not looking for full fledged job offers, but more for advise on what to mention and what not to mention while applying and ofcourse advise on legal matters in the US (or Australia). Ofcourse, if there are job offers among them, please don’t hesitate to post them, I would certainly be happy with that
Here comes a copy of the original post:
The reason for posting is that I’m looking for a job. More specifically, I’m looking for a job abroad. I’m Dutch, 25 y/o and currently working in the UK, but I would love to do some globetrotting and start working in the US or Australia or something for a couple of years at least. However, it is very hard to find work there if you’re stuck here.
I’m currently working in the IT business. I have a lot of experience in Microsoft based products, have some certificates in them and use them a lot. I’ve been a system administrator in a medium sized company using primarily Windows NT.
Currently I’m learning a lot about RDBMSs, primarily Oracle, DB2, Sybase and MS SQL Server and I’m ploughing through books of networking and telecommunication subjects.
For hobbies I use a lot of DTP products and know my way around CorelDRAW, PhotoPaint, PhotoShop, PSP and AutoCAD.
I speak Dutch as my primary language, English almost fluently, German quite well and French OK.
I know that individually, none of these skills really stand out, but combined it might give me an advantage or something. I’m also a very keen worker and a very fast learner.
So I was wondering if anyone has suggestions, advise, job opportunities even maybe? Any info would be appreciated.
I’m going to ask a friend of mine to check you out. He’s a tech recruiter for a global computer business solutions company, in fact, he got me the job I’ll be starting in a little over two weeks!
A huge plus is if you are willing to travel, fyi. the languages are definitely a plus, you should always include them as strong skills.
Thinksnow:
That is so cool! Thanks a lot. And I am most definately willing to travel. That’s the whole reason why I want to start working abroad!
AWB:
Thanks, but I’ve tried applying on carreer sites before and I don’t have a great experience with that. The thing is, as you might see at my OP, I don’t really have an expertise in anything. I just know a quite a bit on a lot of things.
Whenever I apply on a specific job, I never have the full skills to bring me in from abroad.
That’s why I started this thread. I was hoping anyone could give me advise on where to start looking, what skills are definately lacking in the US (so that I can start and expertise myself in that), that sort of stuff.
As a side note, anyone from Australia/New-Zealand who can give me some advise?
problem, the company has a max relo package of $5,000, which I doubt would be sufficient to get you over here.
I would think that if you can’t find decent work on that side of the pond, take a deep breath, pack a few things and find a way over here (here being the Americas. Otherwise, find an international company over there, try to wok your way upt to a point where you have some options and see about a transfer.
$5,000 would probably be enough though, I don’t have anything to bring except some clothing. All my other stuff I leave here, so basically all I need is a ticket and accomodation.
But thanks anyway thinksnow, I appreciate the effort.
