Helpless help (software variety)

Hardly any software comes with a user manual these days, not even in a PDF version. What they come with is a help facility that helps only if you know the word that describes what you are looking for and it is the same word some programmer thought of.

And maybe not even. If you have a Win 7 computer, open the control panel, under systems and security click on troubleshooting. In the search window at the upper right, type in “recovery”. You will be informed that there is no entry for recovery. But in the bottom of the panel on the left side of the troubleshooting window is a live button called “recovery”. And it works too. Click on it and you can go back to a previous state of the computer before you had problems. I have used it twice in the past month, both times after trying to install Java and have various things not work. The first time, it was hell figuring that the magic incantation was “recovery” but the second time I recalled the magic word, but not how to find. Help was certainly no help.

Everyone just uses Google now, but you’re right - the key to finding the answer is knowing how to ask the question (which sounds obvious and stupid, but the devil is in the detail)

And smart phones… ( are much smarter than I am )
They don’t even tell you that you need to go online & guess. Grrrrrrr
