Here’s my problem: For some reason, whenever my screen saver tries to kick in, the computer stops it right away, and then decides that it should access the hell out of my floppy-drive instead. This pisses me off, as they have nothing to do with each other whatsoever. I know I can expect as much from a windows machine (Windows 98). I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about computers, so any ideas or info about why this is happenening, specific or otherwise, would be greatly appreciated!!
maybe you’re using one of those screen savers that shows a bunch of pictures, and you’ve accidentally got the settings so that it looks for pictures on a:?
nope…it’s just the standard “3D Flying Objects” screen saver, and it is not set to display a textured flag of a bitmap file or anything like that. From what I can tell, this just started happening one day, so who knows…
before we offer a solution, we need to troubleshoot…
try the following:
detach the floppy drive, see what it does now.
change the screensaver, see if the problem recurs.
change the standby time of your computer, perhaps the comp is trying to go into standby mode at the same time the screensaver is trying to come on and they are somehow conflicting.
do a ctrl-alt-del and end task all but explorer, see whether the same problem occurs now, probably a 3rd party service is conflicting.
report your results here, and we’ll go from there…
Some virus scanners automatically scan your discs for viruses when the screen saver comes on. I know McAffee does. Look in your display properties for a tab called “screen scan” (or something similar)
Of course, it could be 1,000 other things, but that’s something to look out for.
Well son of a…
I had forgot that I reinstalled my McAffee virus scan program, which was actually about 3 years old. My free support ran out and I was crossing my fingers that it would upgrade my scan engine for free (no dice). I guess the program settings were messing up my screen saver, because I just unistalled it and everything works fine. Excellent advice!!! I’m surprised I didn’t make the connection myself.
