I’ve been to San Antonio, Houston, Austin, Port Isabel, Beaumont, Lubbock and Canyon, Texas. I always found the people to be friendly and nice. There was an especially nice and friendly waitress at a restaurant in Amarillo. 
I don’t have a gripe with Texas.
On the other hand, Knoxville is one of the worst places I’ve been, containing rude and uncouth people. Maybe that has to do with the fact that the only reason I go to Knoxville is to watch the Auburn Tigers kick U. of Tennessee’s ass in football, which they do more often than not. Yeah, that’s it! I suppose that when the Knoxville folk aren’t under the influence of Poor Loser Syndrome, they may be ok, but I don’t know that for certain.

You can’t say all Texans are civilized, but the place DEFINITELY has its share of assholes and asshole behavior, and these DART “cops” are part & parcel of that. All this ‘broad brush’ stuff tends to overlook that. These are nasty fucking excuses for “cops” whose only power should be the ability to remain in their jail cell, but from what I’ve read of Texas justice, that’s not gonna happen.
Really, this kind of shit apparently happens ALL the TIME in Texas. People get dragged to death for being black, (practically) whole towns (Tulia) are convicted of drug dealing on the word of shady characters, not to mention the Texas justice systems’ evil eagerness to kill children. Other states have their scandals, but Jeebus, Texas seems to pull this kind of crap with a frequency and severity that would gag a maggot.

I will admit that I may have been pushing it a bit on the Tulia thing: the town has a little over 5000 residents and only 38 people were jailed on false claims. But just how deep does the shit have to get in Texas before you can smell it, Shagnasty?
Aside from Jim Schutze’s article in The Dallas Observer, has there been any other media play on this story? I would really like to see this blow up in DART’s face. The agency has had some pretty damning stories printed about it since it’s inception. Of course, most of these have been in The Observer, which as Dallas’ alternative newspaper doesn’t always get the respect it deserves. Curiously enough, the current (although probably not next) mayor of Dallas, Laura Miller, is a former Dallas Observer columnist. Jim Schutze now covers the beat she left behind.
FWIW, I have spent some time inside the DART Transit Police headquarters. I installed the energy management system there and I still have to go back there on occasion to try to reprogram around the deficiencies in the system. I have met a number of the people who work at DART, and quite a few of them are decent people. That being said, I haven’t ever interacted with any of the regular beat cops, but the impression I get is that they work for DART because they couldn’t get a job at a “real” police force. Again, this is only my impression and has absolutely no facts to back it up. But if any of the other DFW area dopers has some inside info on DART police, share it with us.
I’d really like to see these scum punished for this kind of crap. I like Texas in spite of assholes like these, but I’d like it better if this wasn’t tolerated here (or anywhere else).

What’s to defend? All those things are indeed wrong/immoral/just plain bad. Of course, the fact that everything you mentioned is far from business as usual for the state seems to not matter to you.

You = stupid. People don’t get dragged to death for being black with any regularity. That’s a lynching, and lynchings are extremely rare in the United States. Yes, some idiots did kill a black man by dragging him to death, but that wasn’t indicative of some sort of widespread practice.
Also, we’ve had various threads here on the dope pitting the New York City Transit police, I’m guessing that means New York is full of idiot assholes too?
Does this stuff happen “all the time” in Texas? I don’t know, and you don’t either you stupid fuck. You just let whatever fecal matter was flowing up your throat spew out your mouth there, and you had no fucking clue what you were talking about and nothing to support that assertion.
I do think we can generalize that transit police have a habit of getting into embarassing situations like this. But how we can generalize about the entire state of Texas is beyond me.
