I didn’t start this thread to bash Texas and/or Texans, but I have a feeling it will get heated. What I wanted to do is make a suggestion or two (or three… or four…) as to why we poke fun at Texas, based on stereotypes.
[ul][li]Texans are stereotypically loud and obnoxious. I know they all aren’t. I’m talking about stereotypes. While only a small percentage of Texans probably wear ten-gallon hats, they are often depicted in film and on televsion and in other media as wearing them with ‘cowboy-style’ suits. They talk loud and flash their money. That’s a stereotype, but here’s something I can think of that actually happened: There’s a photo of Lynden B. Johnson showing off a scar on his torso. This indicates a lack of decorum to me. (And I’ve heard he’d conduct parts of meetings from the toilet.)[/li][li]They seem full of themselves – even though Texas is only the second-biggest state, and if Alaska were divided into two equal-sized states Texas would be the third-largest. And yet, ‘Everything is begger in Texas’ is a well-known aphorism. Talking big makes them a target to be knocked down a couple of pegs.[/li][li]The Death Penalty.[/li][li]Conservatives.[/li][*]Duhbya.[/ul]
I recall visiting Texas as a young man in 1976, and again every few years after that for about a decade. I can genuinely state that back in 1976 at least, I experienced greater hospitality and courtesy than pretty well anywhere else across the USA.
Perhaps the 4 points are very valid, and if so, I don’t want to get in the way of a good Texas bashing, but I personally have very fond memories - particularly being poured a drink of Coca Cola at the Dallas Cowboys home stadium by the owner of the team himself. Long story that one, but it’s a good one.
Pretty much EVERY state deserving some bashing. I wish people would grow some fucking senses of humor and learn to live with that. I’m in Florida fer Christ’s sake, if I can somehow take it without whining about stereotypes and bringing up the proverbially trite “broad brush” then people in any other state should be able to. FLORIDA, for god’s sake.
[ul][li]Muslims are stereotypically terrorists I know they all aren’t. I’m talking about stereotypes. While only a small percentage of Muslims probably crash vehicles into buildings, they are often depicted in film and on televsion and in other media as doing so They talk funny and worship a false god. That’s a stereotype, but here’s something I can think of that actually happened: they flew a plane into a building. This indicates a lack of decorum to me. [/li][li]They seem full of themselves – even though the Middle East is a small part of the world, they act as if they’re the most important Talking like this makes them a target to be knocked down a couple of pegs.[/li][li]The Death Penalty.[/li][li]Conservatives.[/li][li]Osama.[/ul][/li]
Fucking ragheads.
Of that I have no doubt. In my experience, the South is full of very nice people.
Oh, lighten up! I’m from California – ‘The Land Of Fruits And Nuts’. I’ve been warned time and again up here in Washington that I shouldn’t let people know that. Being from California, I face the stereotype of being a coke-snorting, sex-crazed, ireesponsible flake. Hell, it’s been years and years and years since I’ve done coke! New Yorkers have the stereotype of being rude. Arkansas is full of hillbillies. Alaskans hump polar bears. I think most people are proud of their home states. There’s nothing wrong with a little ribbing. Especially when it comes to Texas! :d
Seriously, I pick on Texas a lot, but I pick on the stereotypes. Some of my favorite people, both friends, or public figures are Texans. I figure any state Kinky has a shot to be governor of can;t be all that bad. I will of course, hold out final judgment until after the election on that particular point.
And yes I did say “Fuck texas and their execution happy courts” in that thread, I’d hope that anyone reading it read it less as a general condemnation of the state, than as a reaction to what happened.
But aside from that, yeah Texas to me is harmless, more a source of humor than anything else.
I was born and raised in the Northeast, but I spent a month in Texas in 1971. Not quite the worst of times for a snot-nosed liberal long haired kid to be there (in terms of the bitter arguments over Vietnam), but not far from it. I was consistently treated with courtesy, respect and hospitality.* If common courtesy has declined since then, then perhaps it is because folks from the North have taken residence there.
(I joke, because I love…)
*Of course, it was many years later that I found out “Bless your heart” was a genteel way of saying “Screw you”.
Good ol’ Johnny Hates the USA so much he takes unprovoked assmonkey swipes at people who happen to be from one of the states in the Union and his MGB helicopter, hovoring over our threads.
Give the stereotyping, of all types, a fucking rest already. Yeah, you say it’s a joke, but it’s old, man. So, go have yourself a nice spot of tea, old boy, and elect a new queen.
Shall I put the fucking smilies in this post? I think I’ll have to, otherwise people will take it serious.
