Well there was this bear…
Yeah, but they’re not so good in a falafel.
Feel free to pit my apology as well.
I’ll just show myself out.
You’re thinking about the wrong part of the body. I remember the famous fable of Aesop: The Rabbit and the Bear.
Rabbit walks up to Bear who’s sitting next to a tree. Bear says, “Rabbit, excuse me, sir, but I’m taking a shit. I hate it when it sticks to my fur. Tell me, do you have a problem with shit sticking to your fur?”. Rabbit thinks for a moment and replies “No, not at all”.
So Bear picks up Rabbit, and wipes his ass with him.
Two things: Damn you Tripolar! I wanted to do the bear joke.
Second, Lute, your apology was never much of an apology. It has to be more than “I’m sorry, but I’m different. I’m ill”. That’s not an apology. It’s an excuse. You need to man up and admit that you did wrong, and you need to say it such a way that we know you understand how you did wrong.
You know you fucked up. Convince me that you know you fucked up. That’s an apology. I’ll be pretty kind if you do that.
Hell, there is nothing I respect more than a good apology - provided it’s heart felt.
Oh fun! Citizen Pained was all sorts of crazy.
A pitting very much called for.
I have to admit, I did not see this Pit thread coming. Mostly because by the time I got to “Hi, I need $3000 for air conditioning,” I wrote it off as a joke.
Lute, let’s look at your apology. Maybe I can help you, here.
Forget about the first paragraph, let’s look at the second. We know that you were not looking for the entire three grand. That’s not the goddamn point. It’s that you asked at all. And then you say 'feel free to contact me, and I will pay you back". That’s just bullshit.
If you want to apologize you should give everybody there money back and feel bad about the fact you asked for it.
That joke has always seemed backwards to me. If shit doesn’t stick to the rabbit it will be left stuck to the bear. It would be like wiping your arse with grease-proof paper.
Jesus H. Well, that took some balls, anyway, so there is that.
Up nort’ here (where it gets seriously cold), it’s illegal for utility companies to cut you off for non-payment in winter months. You’ll still have to pay, and they’ll work with you to get you on payment plans, but they cannot cut you off. They also have furnace and A/C repair/replacement options and will set up financing for same. And plus, it’s May, so you’d have lots of time to save up before it got really cold.
So that’s just the cold part. I might have some modicum of sympathy for the cold part.
But for the heat part? That’s some weapons-grade crazy, right there.
Depends on your interpretation of ‘do you have a problem’. In this case the bear might have meant ‘does it bother you’. Either way, the rabbit was acting offended at the question, replying indignantly, and should have had the good sense to consider the possibilities before responding to a talking bear.
I haven’t been sure how to write this post, but after reading this thread I’d like to say something.
I didn’t like the thread in MPSIMS. I thought it was tasteless and ill advised. But, at the time it appeared I wasn’t aware that Lute was having “problems”. This does not make that thread OK. It should not have been posted. I didn’t figure on contributing.
Buut c’mon, people, have you never, ever, EVER done or said something so foolish that you’d give anything to take it back, to have a “do over”? I know I certainly have, that moment when one realizes, “what the HELL made me say/do that?” I’ll bet Lute feels like that now, and so I’m not going to cast the kind of stones I’ve seen whizzing through the air in this thread. For as long as he posts now, folks are going to remember it, and so I ask you, take a deep breath and back off.
I’ve interacted with Lute a number of times on this board, particularly back when the “Finish the …” stories were in vogue. He seemed bright, intelligent, and well-informed, and I liked writing with him. If things are going hard in his life, (and I’m NOT talking about money), then I’m sorry for him and truly hope things get better.
Please, let’s let this thread sink away and let a poster who has been a valued member try and put things together.
Fobtmpsims
The difference being, that he doesn’t seem to have the self awareness you have described. Did you read his apology?
More excuse than apology, no ownership at all. That’s what makes the stones fly, in my opinion. Everytime he opens his mouth, he reveals a little more of who he really is, and manages to make things worse.
Personally, I find his actions disgraceful in the extreme. He’s been given lots of opportunity to take some ownership and develop some self awareness, for which I am certain he’d get nothing but accolades. But he hasn’t, instead he has weaseled around with a non apology and kind of deserves the heaps he’s getting, as a result.
I know too many people, actually struggling with mental health issues, to see this guy use it as his go to excuse, for bad behaviour, and not to be disgusted by it.
And let’s remember, it’s not real stones, it’s the internet and it’s only unkind words, in reality. Unkind words, than many may feel, this piece of work, needs to hear.
Meh. I’m not defending the guy, but I live in south Georgia and heat does kill. You northerners don’t understand. Not too many people die of heat stroke in Minnesota.
But my problem with this guy is he seems resistant to steps to deal with extreme heat that don’t involve central AC or even money out of his own pocket. To flip it around to cold, this is a guy that would refuse to use space heaters because they don’t cover the whole condo. Fuck that.
My apologies. I’ve been on a razor’s edge lately, and my brain was already a smoking crater after going through all those legendary meltdowns, so there you go.
Although if you want to see the trainwrecks I mentioned, they are more than worth it. CitizenPained is a lightweight compared to Freeky, Beryl, and TVAA. They aren’t considered classic SDMB for nothing.
Just space them out a bit.
I agree with this. I mocked the original thread, because it was a jackass move, but he’s admitted it. It doesn’t really matter if his apology is weak – he obviously feels like shit about it and continuing to pile on is just mean.
Lute, the thing about an apology is that it works better if you are a little harder on yourself than you think you deserve. When you make a mistake, you deserve to eat a certain amount of shit over it. If you offer up an apology that undershoots that by making excuses, people will want to give you more shit. If you take full responsibility, people will actually respect that and pull you back in the other direction by saying stuff like, “don’t worry about it, we all make mistakes.” Paradoxically, you end up feeling better if you don’t try to downplay your own mistake.
no u.
Let him give all of the money back without having to be asked first and then we can start this discussion.
Want to share links to your favorite meltdowns? And, I don’t know if it helps you deal with your mental issues, but it does me a world of good to laugh at others’ craziness. It’s like reading an advice column; I feel so feel sane by comparison.
