He has explicitly allied himself with the Khomenist leaders of Iran while explicitly saying that the Iranian people were too brainwashed to be able to choose to work for peace with the United States and Israel. He really is off his rocker, and seems to believe that a vibrant and energetic push from Iran for peace would be bad and that instead they need nuclear weapons for “defense”, even if they didn’t sponsor terrorism and were aggressively seeking good relations with the US and Israel.
That, amongst other wacky claims like saying that Iran invading Iraq for more than half a decade while Sadaam was begging for a ceasefire was an act of ‘defense’.
So, yes. He specifically aligned himself with Iran’s Islamic heads of state only as long as they’re so stridently anti-American that they’ll develop nuclear weapons to threaten the US.
He has specifically said that the Iranian people are too brainwashed to be able to know truth from fiction, and thus cannot allowed self determination. And further, that the theocracy should continue to deny their desire for democracy that would work for peace with the US and Israel and a cessation to Iran’s nuclear program even though the vast majority of Iranian people want peace, warm relations with the US and Israel, an end to the their nuclear program if they get external aid. That is, he specifically opposed the Iranian people’s drive for peace with the United States and an end to the theocracy while supporting the theocracy’s right to govern without the consent of their subjects and to nuke up in order to threaten the US. He explicitly stated, in fact, that he’d support anybody at all as long as they threatened the US with nuclear weapons. So he’s pro theocracy and warmongering as long as it’ll threaten the United States.
To be fair, he did this while talking out of both sides of his mouth. He claimed that he “opposed” the theocrats while turning right around and saying that the Iranian people couldn’t be allowed to govern themselves and the theocrats needed to maintain power so that they could oppose the US by pointing nuclear weapons at it.
The funny part is that Der is exactly what he hates. He supports a tyranical, brutal regime because it opposes his enemies. Classic American realpolitik.
He’d have made a perfect Cold Warrior back in the day. But I’m sure he doesn’t even realize it.

As I’ve said, try it for yourself. Start an OP saying “Liberals are all evil morally corrupt people prone to lying” (all claims Der has made about conservatives in GD) and see how long it takes to get the thread locked, moved to the Pit or Warned. Or try to respond to one of Der’s claims about conservatives by saying that people who say that about conservatives are evil and morally corrupt.
