Hey! I moved to Atlanta!

Well, I actually live in Decatur, but it’s almost the same thing.

For all the teeming millions who have been wondering what on earth has been going on with my life: here’s the update.

I moved from Seattle to Decatur in mid-September, the same week that Hurricane Ivan blew through here. Did it make my move just that much more exciting? Why, yes it did!

I’m doing a research fellowship at the CDC, and it is too cool for words. I get to go to work every day and do work that I want to do, that I like to do, that I’m good at doing, that I chose to do, and that people appreciate out loud with words. And, in a small but tangible way my work makes the world a better place to live in. No, it doesn’t pay very well, and I can’t check the boards from work. There have to be some drawbacks.

I have a one-bedroom apartment, and I live alone. It’s nice because I’m not dealing with anyone else’s crap, but it’s kind of lonely. My husband decided to stay put in Seattle while I experience this adventure solo.

I know one person here, and while I’m getting to know others in my fellowship class and wave hello to folks in my neighborhood, and there’s the really nice tortiseshell kitty who lives downstairs, I’m starting to notive that the wekkends have a certain sucking sound to them.

So - where are the local Dopers? Anyone want to get together? Hello???

Hey herownself, welcome to Atlanta! My daughter did a CDC Fellowship (EID I think it was) between undergrad and grad school. She’s doing research right next door to you at Emory University these days and is a Doper also…I’ll tell her to check in with you!

Given I have a grown daughter, I’m a little (ahem!) older than you…so consider that you have a free “rentamom” in Atlanta if you need one! My email is in my profile if you want.

I’m supposed to be in here logging off right now :o so I will check in on this thread and post more later!

Glad you are here

Welcome to the area, herownself! We had a fairly large dopefest back in August – a nice time was had by all! I’m OTP (Outside the Perimeter), but I venture in for Stitch ‘n’ Bitch meetings and such, so holler if you need anything!

Welcome to Atlanta. It’s a nice town, hope you enjoy yourself.

ATL!.. ATL! Lil Jon

Since Mom (smartini ) already filled you in an most of my story, I’ll just say hi. As she said, I also did a fellowship at CDC. I was an EID fellow 6 years ago working in Childhood and Respiratory Diseases. I had a great time there. It really is an experience unlike any other. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Now, I’m right next door to you (assuming your at the Clifton campus) at Emory. We should get together for lunch one day.

Welcome south!

I, too, live in Decatur, and love it here.

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, may I recommend the Great Decatur Beer Tasting Festival? You can find information about the festival and other upcoming activities in Decatur here.

And if you’re looking for a great way to meet people, get involved with Volunteer! Decatur. You can read about it at the link provided above. My wife and I volunteer for just about every event throughout the year. We have a great time and have met some wonderful people.

I’ll send you an e-mail later on today about other things to do. Got to go to work right now!

Welcome to Atlanta!

While you’re getting acclimated, here’s a tip that might help pass some of the time when you’re in your apartment alone the first few weeks: the DeKalb County Public Library has a pretty decent selection of movies available on both VHS and, increasingly, on DVD. Movies circulate for a week, and generally can be renewed once provided no one’s got a hold them. The late fee is $1/day/item. Most of the branches have a only couple of shelves worth of videos out for browsing, but the Covington branch is the designated A/V materials branch, so if you want to browse the shelves, Covington’s the place to go. Your best bet is to browse the online catalog and reserve whatever you’re interested in for pickup at your local branch.
