… and I really need a straight answer, okay, please?
Am I repeating myself a lot in my threads or posts?
I’m asking this here, because this place means a lot to me and y’all have always shot straight with me, right or wrong, and right now I’m in kind of a precarious position because of the Alzheimer’s testing, and I for sure don’t wanna be just tolerated at The Dope.
I’d like to feel that I’m okay with y’all, and that every now and then I do add something to the board, but I have to tell you that here lately I have lost a lot of my self-confidence, and I find myself second-guessing and wondering: “Dude! Didn’t you just post that???”
And because I feel some trepidation, I don’t go back and check my posts, because to find a duplicate answer would make me cringe, so I just don’t do it. Guess I’m still in denial. or something.
So could you send me a PM or just tell me straight out?
It;s tough for a 59 year old to remember what he’s said before, but it’s even tougher for one with severe short-term memory problems and one who is as detail oriented as me.
I’d really appreciate it, 'cause I do “listen” to you, even if we don’t agree .
Isn’t there a rule about opening multiple threads on the same subject?
Seriously, I just took a quick look through your posts for the last month and nothing jumped out as duplicates.
I think most of the regulars know by now and would make allowances. Probably won’t even be noticeable unless you started repeating yourself within a thread.
Thanks pat, but to further clarify…
A lot of us older guys kinda remember what gets a laugh or what they think is funny as hell, and if there’s an opportunity to use it, we will.
For instance, my “Standing in a hammock” response to the question “How do you GUYS masturbate” in another thread…
Well see, I got that from a very old joke which goes like this:
“I’d like to eff you in the worst way, baby!”
“Well, what is the worst way, Hon?”
“Standing up in a hammock!”
See what I mean? That stuff comes around a lot with me, and I use it every chance I get if I think I can get a laugh.
I just don’t want someone thinking: “Here comes ol Quas’ with that ‘standing up in a hammock’ gag again!’”
I appreciate your answer, and thank you also for checking me out.
Lots of people repeat themselves in posts here. I know I do. I assume that there is no one hanging on my every word and they won’t possibly remember my life story from thread to thread, so I know I’ve re-told stories and used the same lines in several threads. I see lots of people do the same thing and it’s probably for the same reason I do it.
There have been a handful of posters who have been deemed as “one trick ponies” and they do get called out and often mocked. But considering the number of posters here, it’s rare.
So even if you do find that you’re repeating yourself, don’t sweat it. No one will notice. And if they do, we’ll call you out on it and mock you for it - but gently
Good lord, you should spend some time around my (wonderful) father-in-law if you want to hear the same punch lines over and over and over and over and over and over and O-ver! It’s just a thing you fogies do.
Y’all don’t wanna see me on the Science Channel as the first cyber-space ghost to haunt y’all, do ya’?
I think I’m doing what the shrinks call “compensating”, kids.
I’m scared to death of this friggin EEG and what it might record and mean.
Shit. There I go again, thinking it’s all about ME.
There are so many others of us here on the Dope, that are going through maybe not the same thing, but are just as frightened as I am.
Dammit! I see men and women in my ER (IANAD!) in cardiac arrest, and we cannot save them and here I am whining about making it to 59 and catchin’ Alzheimer’s.
I have had a great life with a good heart and body! Why can’t I just shut the fuck up???
Well, in the words of a RL friend of mine who became a Quadrapalegic in October: “Just 'cause my situation sucks giant green donkey balls doesn’t mean your green donkey ball situation doesn’t also suck.”
I don’t think you have much to worry about. Many posters here repeat themselves (or habitually try to redirect the focus of a thread) for various reasons–sometimes because they apparently feel very strongly about something, and sometimes, it seems, because they just like to post a lot.
And a lot of the threads here seem (to me, IMHO) to be started more just because someone wants to say something about him- or herself. Example: “How do you butter your toast? Me, I go right to left. Isn’t that fascinating? How about you?” Then you get 100 posts saying either “right to left,” “left to right,” or the occasional “top to bottom,” etc. No one really cares how 100 anonymous people butter their toast. It’s the message board equivalent of small talk.
Most people wouldn’t even notice even if you did repeat yourself. (They’re too busy telling the world how they butter their toast.)
I’ve been reading much more than I’ve been posting lately, and in all that reading, I don’t recall seeing you repeat yourself. And, if you somehow have repeated yourself, I certainly have not found myself saying, “Jeez, I wish Quasimodem would stop repeating himself.”
Relax. If my experience is anything to go by, you’re doing fine. Keep on keeping on; and rest assured, if you do repeat yourself to the point where it becomes bothersome, we’ll let you know.
I’m a few years older than you, and I find myself being repetitious all the time. I think it’s just a matter of having lived long enough to have a lot of stories to tell. Don’t worry about it.
I know I repeat myself a lot. As someone upthread said, I assume that not everyone here is hanging on my every word, so I tell some anecdotes repeatedly. I try hard not to be a ‘one trick pony’ and hope I succeed.
But I think it’s quite normal to kind of fixate on something you have. For instance, I’m drawn to threads about kidney stones/kidney and bladder issues. Why? Because I’ve had a million of 'em myself.
But repeating yourself? Not that I’ve noticed. And if I do notice, I promise you I’ll at least PM you about it (I certainly wouldn’t pit you!)
ETA: I, personally, thought that “standing up in a hammock” bit was funny!
Although I haven’t noticed you repeating yourself, I have noticed a lot of people in this thread repeating the phrase that they have not noticed you repeating yourself. :smack:
I appreciate it, Borborygmi (A Carlin, fan, too, huh? ;)).
I really hope that my sense of humor stays with me as long as possible. I can find humor in most anything, including the EOAD, and sitting here in front of my computer looking like a guy with a really bad head injury!
