As far as the OP’s old testament type curse, I thought it was over the top and I don’t really agree with it anyway.
I just get irritated when someone trots out the mantra of: “not every single person in group X did something bad so you can’t say group X is bad.” I disagree intensely with that sentiment. Some groups are bad (defined as violent, intolerant, xenophobic, etc) and when someone voluntarily associates themselves with that group then they are also ‘bad.’ Nor do I see why religions should be exempt from criticism. Official teachings are one thing but when people claim your faith and commit atrocities in the name of that faith, then that religion should be looked at very carefully, maybe even God forbid! reformed.

I believe you just attributed something to me that I never said and don’t even particularly agree with. I don’t like any religion and don’t cut them any slack but I don’t go out of my way to be grossly or gratuitously insulting either.
The group the OP is talking about is Muslims. Are they bad? We’re not debating whether a group can be all good or bad, just that the particular group he’s slagging, isn’t a bad group.

I’m not so sure about whether those fuckheads represent Islam or not. What kind of Islam? It isn’t really a monolithic entity you know. If you are talking about the Wahabbis in KSA or the ones in Pakistan that are more-or-less indistinguishable then I believe they do represent Islam. The Pakistani and SA varieties are just as valid as any other branch, they have their own Islamic scholars and believe they are following god’s will just as much as the sufis or any other sect. It would be presumptuous (to say the least!) of me to tell them they are misinterpreting their own holy book.

I think it is important to recognise that the insurgents in Iraq are not targetting people based on their religion. They are targetting what they perceive to be invaders of their country and the government installed by those invaders. In practical terms they are killing many more *Moslem * Iraqis than Westerners. Of course when it comes to hostages, Westerners are worth much more to them than a fellow Iraqi. Which reflects our own valuation.
