I guess it boils down to this… she’s not around to defend herself so we’d just as soon not go into details or give examples. It doesn’t feel right to do otherwise. Can we just leave it as she wasn’t universally beloved?

I only met her briefly in real life exactly once. She lived fairly close to me for a while in Massachusetts not that long before she died. After I met her, she kept asking me out for dinner and I said I would go but I could never get her to agree on any details. Any suggestion I made had some problem that was a deal-breaker. I never could figure out why she wanted to go to dinner with me anyway. It was fairly obvious that we didn’t have much in common besides this board but I was still willing to have a conversation with her in person. We never did come up with a plan that she liked so I just gave up after a few months of sporadic attempts to come up with something. Then she moved and died shortly thereafter. I don’t know if I could have helped her in some small way or if I dodged a bullet myself and will never know.

“Not universally beloved” is a label that can be applied to approximately everyone ever.
One might expect that if it doesn’t feel right to give details it might not be right to make the accusations in the first place. Being as Opal’s not only not around, as you say, to defend herself, she’s never again going to be able to practice whatever backstabbing behavior we’re suddenly coy about. Might be time to let it go.

Jeff, I remember you from the early days of this board, and in a generally good way. And sure, Opal wasn’t universally beloved. She could be a really good person, but she was frequently a first-class pain in the neck. Like i said, I’m not here to defend her honor.
But it was too late to just leave it at “wasn’t universally beloved” once Monty made the remark I quoted in the OP. She already wasn’t around to defend herself when he said that. All I see is a coward who’s trying to have it both ways, getting a good slam in on Opal, and then using the fact that she’s not with us anymore as an excuse to just leave it hanging there.
