I met a person who identified herself as Opal in real life. At least, I think I did. As I recall the incident, which may or may not have occurred, I liked her, but our online friendship bumped up against the “men are from Mars” problem others have described, in that she wasn’t looking for solutions, just someone to listen.
If it is any consolation, I think Opal would have loved the white knighting, the righteous indignation, the insults, the backbiting and, most of all, the manufactured drama that this thread in her name has elicited.
Well, not all of us are like Morgenstern, who seems to think that referring to disembodied parts of women is some sort of deep insult rather than a confession of a psychopath emerging at the first moment of being called on his misogynistic bullying of the dead.

Never knew her in RL. Had an unfortunate and clumsy interaction with her on this board, one I regret. But AFAIK, she was pretty into open expression, and if Monty’s original comment crossed a line, I don’t think it was one that would have bent the deceased too much out of shape.
I personally have no desire to learn additional details, but nor do I think the allegations are especially damning, at least in this context. At any rate a skim of the 1999 Monty/Opal flamefest linked above pretty much tells you what you need to know.

If I seemed hypocritical to say, in effect, “I don’t want to say anything because OpalCat can’t defend herself” and then follow that by saying “She wasn’t universally beloved”, well, I guess I have to own that. Sometimes I have trouble restraining the snark inside of me. Maybe it’s similar to the Beast inside Sam Vimes. Maybe we all have internal beasts we struggle to restrain and none of us are universally beloved?
