"Hey! Oh, it's the remake....."

The Fog
Prom Night

The latter is not a great movie but it is at least more entertaining with Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Nielsen. The Fog, however, is cinematic horror gold and whatever they released in the horror crap remake trend was just a mess.

I do sometimes have the opposite reaction:

“Ooh, Thomas Crown Affair…oh, it’s the original.”

There were a lot of classic movies remade for television. I haven’t seen them, but by all accounts they’re not great Miracle on 34th street, It Happened One Christmas (It’s a Wonderful Life), The Absent-Minded Professor
Disney has remade several of its films for theatrical release, although these remakes are better regarded – The Absent-Minded Professor (with Robin Williams, as Flubber), The Shjaggy Dof, The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday.

The ones that really belong in this column are the remakes of low-budget grade-Z films. What do you call those? Grade ZZZ films? Here are some, with the remakes
The She Creature — remade as Creature of Destruction

It Conquered the World – remade as Zontar, The Thing from Venus

Invasion of the Saucermen – remade as Attack of the Eye Creatures (or Attack of the the Eye Creatures, as was pointed out when they riffed this one on MST3K)

Actually, the Lindsay Lohan version is pretty good. Probably the best thing she ever did, not that that is a very high bar.

This one, also, was fairly decent. Stewart was of course fine, Helen Hayes did a good job with the sister Veta, John McGiver was (as always) excellent as Dr. Chumley, and they got Jesse White to come back as Mr. Wilson.

True, there was no particular reason to do the remake, but it did no violence to the original.

The Gibson version is a better in my opinion. It has style. Point Blank is a wonderful piece of history with all our old time favorite actors and wonderfully filmed, but the direction seems to be 70s TV style.

I mentioned the original Father of the Bride to a group of younger co-workers, and I don’t think any of them even knew that the Steve Martin version was a remake.

I have that same reaction with Ocean’s Eleven
