I’m from Huntington, WV, and the majority of We Are Marshall was filmed here. Matthew McConaughey’s charachter’s house is on the same street that I grew up on. There’s a tiny little park across the street, which you can see in the movie, that I used to play in when I was little. My brother was actually living in a house just a few doors down from our childhood home, so he got to watch the scenes being filmed from his front porch.
The scene is kinda funny to watch for locals, because it shows people walking to the football game, but it’s shot miles and miles and miles from the stadium (though actually only a block or so away from the real Jack Lengyel’s house – they couldn’t get permission to use it).
It’s fun to watch all the local places, and the scenes that I actually went to see filmed are really cool. The best part of the whole movie though, is a close-up reaction shot of two of my best friends! They got cast as extras playing faculty in a scene where there is a huge meeting, and one student bursts in to let them know about the protest outside, then you hear all these students outside chanting – and it cuts to a nice closeup my friends looking at each other! We went to see the movie with them, so it was even cooler.
Sidekicks was filmed in Houston. Many shots of many places that I recognize. The waterwall at the tower shot was nice; I used to eat lunch there when I worked nearby.
I was an extra in that movie. I’m visible in a crowd scene for about a second.
