Looks like the two macrobrew giants are combining forces to make one bigger company known as MillerCoors (clever name). Looks like the next step to total insipidness has been taken.
Coors is joining with Miller and they’re not calling the company Coolers?
This should be interesting. Miller is a big supporter of the LGBT community and Coors has been a boycott target for the last 30 years because of the Coors family right-wing wackadoodleness.
It’s big news here. Still no word as to whether the corporate headquarters will be located in Colorado or Milwaukee. And the Miller spokesperson who was interviewed on the news this morning was extremely vague about the possibility of jobs being lost.
Well, he can be as vague as he likes, but the corporate-speak regarding the merger suggests that the writing’s on the wall for quite a few workers. From the OP’s link:
So now Pisswater Beerworks will be renamed Pisswater MegaBeerworks. Same same. Both produce crap, so it won’t matter a bit to people with tastebuds. All it will do is drive even more people to decent microbrews.
Do tell. I love to know this swort of thing.
And the new name for the resulting brew?
Moors!
Stay off the Moors!!
Sorry. It’s “Moops”.
There’s been a boycott of Coors in the LGBT community since IIRC 1977 because the family foundation funds right-wing political groups of various levels of extremism. The company itself has a non-discrimination policy, an employee LGBT group and an outreach coordinator (Mary Cheney formerly held the job) but the foundation itself still gives lots of money to the right.
See location field above.
points and laughs, and laughs some more
Silenus is right. They might be richer now, but they will still produce the same swill consumers inexplicably drink.
As silenus notes, this means nothing for those of us who like beer. Someone once told me that light beer is for people who don’t like the taste of beer, they just like to pee! I’ll put whatever comes out of MillerCoorsCo in the same category.
Back in the day when Coors was only brewed in Golden, Colorado and you could only get it west of the Mississippi, it had developed quite a mystique to those of us who couldn’t get it.
A fiend of mine who had grown up in the east, but went off to college at Boulder told me the following was a popular joke back when he was in school in the early 70’s:
Two guys go into a bar in Colorado. The bartender says, “What’ll you have?” The first guy says, “I’d like that world-famous Colorado beer, brewed with pure Rocky Mountain water, and kept under constant refrigeration until it’s served.” The other guy says, “Ahh, just give me the cheapest shit you’ve got.”
Bartender says, “Two Coors, coming up!”
Sure, but there’s always the chance that they’ll share ideas to make Cooler Lite, ….”The Somewhat Fizzy Water Product With Some Alcohol In It That Sort Of Smells Vaguely Sour”! Look for it soon at a frat house near you.
Is there any website that lists all the companies that have ties to right-wing anti-gay groups, as well as those that are actively pro-LGBT? For that matter, is there any site that lists, in general, what types of things various companies support? I only heard about Chick-Fil-A supporting Focus on the Family (IIRC) a couple years ago.
Huh.
[pops open another Speakeasy Prohibition Ale]
HRC maintains a list of companies and ranks them by how GLBT friendly they are. The full list is a giant PDF, that link just goes to the page that links to the PDF.
Hmmm… my friends always pick on me when I refer to Miller Lite as a fine american pilsener.
Didn’t Coors buy Molson, and shut down the I Am Canadian ad campaign?
…ahahahahaha… aha… ha… ha.
Um.
slinks off to a corner
I care not a whit. I will continue to drink my native Coors Banquet from long-neck bottles, as I have all my life. And I do mean ALL my life.
::hey, there sugarbritches, you know how t’do the sleazy slide? Well, lemme put my Coors in my hip pocket and let’s put some boot marks on this’ere dance floor!::
