My roommate in college liked Miller and I liked Budweiser. The apartment fridge was always stocked with both. Sometimes Coors ended up in there too. College and beer go hand in hand.
Miller has a very smooth, clean taste. It’s a nice change every now and then. Especially when I was out of Budweiser. LOL
I’m still a Budweiser and Michelob consumer.
I got to wondering if Miller still tasted the same after 25 years.
Why yes it does.
Still comes in the clear bottles.
I like a wide variety of beers. Sam Adams, Bud and now Miller may be found in my fridge on any given day. Depends entirely on my mood.
Haven’t tried Miller High Life in years and I tend to drink more micro IPAish stuff now. Seems like every time I go to more traditional American yellow lagers I end up drinking PBR or Budweiser. For whatever reason, over the years I have enjoyed drinking an ice-cold Coors Silver Bullet and it’s one of the few beers I don’t mind drinking straight from the can.
Yuengling is my staple, but High Life/MGD are my default go-to domestic macro lagers. They’re dirt cheap (just over $20/30 pack, which is “dirt cheap” for here) and they’re fine. I have no illusions about their taste or quality, but they are fantastic “lawn mower beers,” ice cold out of a cooler on a really hot day.
Yechh…Miller was and is way to sweet. I prefer light and crisp. The only AB product I like is Bud Light Platinum…its only about 130 cals and 6% alcohol. Perfect for summer.
Miller High Life had a series of fantastic commercials (admittedly, aimed at those of the XY chromosome set), directed by Errol Morris, in the mid-aughts. There were a bunch, but these are all themed around food to complement a Miller High Life:
Yuengling and Yuengling Porter are my mainstays. I still enjoy a Bass Ale, Smithwick’s or New Castle. I’ve got some Shiner Bock in the fridge currently. A nice alternative but won’t go into my rotation. I recently rediscovered Killian’s Red.
I guess my favorite beer is Founders Porter and some of the Milk Stouts. But at around $2 a bottle I rarely buy them.
I can’t drink Miller, Coors, Corona and their light beers at all. I can drink ice cold Bud & Yuengling Light.
I like hitting the local breweries that keep popping up but as I don’t like the high hop beers I don’t get to enjoy the numerous IPAs that seem to predominate this of late.
About 2 years ago, our corner store was carrying the 8-packs of the pony bottles. I went through about a 10-week phase of their deliciousness. Since then, they quit carrying them and recently have closed the doors completely. Serves `em right, ha!
I’ll still grab a High Life every now and then… or a Busch.
I was always a Miller guy, and High Life was always my fave.
Budweiser has a horrible aftertaste, Coors isn’t much better. Bud Light is terrible water and, for some reason, I was always able to stomach Keystone better than most beers. Go figure!
Although if I’m going to drink a beer, I will still prefer a Miller over the rest.
Are beers (with the same label) the same as they were 25 years ago? Or have they changed the formula–using cheaper production methods? I keep thinking I read that there has been a big growth in craft beers, European style beers because the mainstream American product is so watered down…
Posted a few weeks ago that I had consumed some Hamms’, which actually wasn’t all that bad. I’d still probably go with PBR or Coors Light if we’re speaking strictly of American piss-colored lager. This is probably a cult beer, but I tried some Narragansett lager when I was up at Fenway Park and liked it quite a lot. I’ve occasionally found some six packs here and there but it’s not stocked regularly outside of New England.
As for Budweiser, I’ve had a long, strange journey with the “King of Beers”. It was actually my go-to beer when I was younger and microbrews weren’t really a thing (back in the early to mid 1990s). In the times since, I’ve had mixed experiences. I swore it off at one point then had it in a bottle and it wasn’t so bad. Had it on tap in 2011 and swore it off again. Had a 12 pack of cans given to me as a gift and actually found it drinkable. I don’t know whether it just tastes that different depending on how its packaged or if it’s my body chemistry or both.
I don’t know if they’ve changed production methods but there’s just more variety with craft beers and the distribution and publicity of small breweries is so much better than what existed in the past. The immediate response by big brewers was to come up with their own craft beers. Some have been more successful than others, with Budweiser American Lager (which I actually quite liked) not doing so well and Shock Top actually being quite successful. Of course the big boys can always buy the little ones out.
Keystone light was better to me and was cheap in Michigan. High life was one of my least favorites of the cheap stuff. Better than Natural light. Worse than Coors or Labatts.
I’m an Old Style man. About a decade ago, I thought I had become a High Life man, then, one day at the bar, after ordering two or three High Lifes, I decided to mix it up and go back to that Chicago favorite, and the first beer I ever tasted (when I was 4 or 5 years old): Old Style. At that second, my tastes for cheap beer were cemented: Old Style for life. I couldn’t believe just how much more flavorful to my tastes it tasted in comparison. It could have been my taste buds were just worn out on High Life at the time, I don’t know, but ever since I’ve tried them side by side, Old Style has won.
Schlitz is quite good, too, but priced a bit higher than these products.
Interestingly, ratebeer.com drinkers seem to agree with me. High Life gets 9 (out of 100) for style (pale lager), and Old Style gets 81 (for the newish krauesened version) and 35 (for the old, pre-2009 version.)
Beer Advocate ranks them much closer, with Miller High Life 66, and Old Style 70.
Is it? I only drank that rancid swill because I was poor, it was available and I didn’t know any better. Of all the collegiate vices I wouldn’t mind another crack at, the Champagne of Beers is pretty far down the fuckin’ list.
I’m not sure if I’ve had Old Style beer. I can’t recall buying any. Maybe at a party? The ice chests at parties were filled with whatever people brought.
I’ll check at the grocery and see if they sell Old Style here.
