It’s not noted in that thread, but “Hi, Opal!” isn’t as funny or amusing as it used to be or seems to be. Many of the veterans feel that it’s overused and silly (what’s the point of an in-joke you always have to explain?)-- basically, it’s become the sign of a newbie who wants badly to fit in by appearing hip to the local slang. Truth is, you’ll find that few longtime posters use the expression.
