High school play practice

Hey I like Bye Bye Birdie.

But since your daughter is a freshman she is probably screaming/fainting girl #12, but the play features a strong anti-war message.
How does a teacher get ‘contracted’ to do a certain play against their wishes?

But if the director is down on the play I imagine it will be pretty tough be in the production. I hope the next play your daughter is involved in is more fun for her.

That would make a lot more sense. But when does school start in the mornings? My classes would begin at 7:40am. In that case, it would be criminal of a teacher to require students to be out that late. No chance to study or do homework, let alone sleep.

Now, I would stay out really late working on the newspaper, but that was our choice in running the newspaper. No teacher ever demanded that we stay out so late. If they had, I would have hoped that my parents would have dealt with it like justwannano.

You may be amused to learn that in the second act of this show, a group of grouchy parents sings a song that begins, “Kids! What’s the matter with kids these days?”

I’m 16.

My parents sound a lot like you, except they wouldn’t go in and start swearing at the teacher. They’d probably send me back in and ask the teacher to come out so that they could talk to her without the other students listening in. They’d know what play it was before, but if they didn’t they’d take that opportunity to ask the teacher.

As for the time, 11:00 is kinda late for a freshman. It’s not unusual for a junior or a senior but I think someone who’s just learning to adjust to high school life may need a little more sleep.

Now, I’m finding it unfathomable to read all these hs stories in this thread. Going two weeks without seeing your parents? I’m just as busy as the next person, but at my school, Yearbook and Newspaper are their own classes and generally clubs, except of course for the thespians and Student Council, never meet after school. (Sports aren’t considered clubs.) Usually, it’s at lunch.

The latest I’ve ever stayed is 5:00, well…actually probably around 7:00, because of Driver’s Ed. My parents always want to know where I am, which is why I have a cell phone. That way I can call and reschedule quickly.

No taxi services either. Or buses. It’s a small town. Perhaps that is why my HS experience hasn’t been like most others’ here.

My school, I think, is pretty sheltered. Or maybe I’m sheltered, having never even been to a party yet :open_mouth: I agree with you that you need to set limits.

11:00 on a weekend might be okay, but on a school night? That’s ridiculous. We’re not talking Broadway here. High school kids are students first and foremost, not actors. Classes started at 7:30 in the morning at my high school. It would have been ludicrous to expect students to show up at 7:30, rested and well-prepared, if they’d been out til 11:00 the night before.

I’m 24, by the way.

Tonight was opening night.
The kids did a good job,At least I think so.
The high school has an auditorium. Permanent stage and seats.so no competition for gym.
Sarah was in 5 scenes. Zebra was right. Mostly screeming teen.
One very talented young man,at least I think so, played Albert Peterson. He has an excellent voice.
The young lady that played mae Peterson was really funny.
The young man playing the bartender stole the scene and without a doubt caused the most laughter.
Just thought you’d like to know.

I hope you got her flowers! If you really want to embarrass the hell out her you could throw them on the stage as she comes out for curtain call. Much less embarrassing is to have them delivered backstage befor the show.

I’m in high school now and have been heavily involved throughout. For example, we’re rehearsing the musical right now, and I’m assistant director and a cast member and costumer and makeup head. Your daughter’s school sounds much larger than mine, which only has about 300 kids in it. Since it sounds like the end of the the practices, 11 o’clock isn’t an unreasonable time for practice to end, especially if they’re doing a dress rehearsal. When we do dress rehearsals, we show up at the same time we would for a performance, about 5 PM, do all the makeup and costuming, start the show at 7, take about three hours for the show with all the costume changes, intermission, etc. and then do clean up. I never leave before midnight on those nights. It wouldn’t be at all odd for practice to get over with at 11; it would even be welcome. My parents are actually glad that I’m involved so heavily in school. If I wasn’t, then my only other entertainment option would be the deserted country road beer party. Because of the people I’ve met through our drama program and others, my friends aren’t the people who do those things. There are much worse things Sarah could be doing. If are really and truly adamantly opposed to rehearsals running so late, get together with like-minded parents and propose something to the school board. I don’t necessarily agree with you, but along the lines of whatever ancient dead guy it was, I’ll defend to the death your right to express your opinion.
