HIGHLY Recommended Film: Nine Queens

If you like great films, have I got one for you. There are a couple of few reasons why I feel certain I wouldn’t be steering anyone wrong:[ol][li]Of the dozen or so people (including my date) who’ve taken my advice and seen the movie, not one negative thing has been said on the “report backs”. The film has won many awards from the likes of the 2001 Argentinean Film Critics, The MoMA, FIPRESCI, the Lleida, et al.[/ol]A seach of Cafe Society came up blank so here goes:[/li]

I won’t do the spoiler thing, but in my opinion, the grifter / con-man tale was much better than the Usual Suspects, with a better story line than the Sting, and more refreshing than Guy Richies freshmen effort; Lock Stock. It uses none of the stereotypical, Hollywood gimmicks and is damn well the $9 ticket price.

Don’t worry…
NO SPOILERS HERE

OK, I thought it was a pretty good movie.

I’ve only seen it once, but as “complicated” as it is, at the end pretty much everything seemed to make sense (and as is required in a good con game/sting type of movie, even things that during the movie you chalk up to “weak” coincidences turn out not to be coincidences at all, but part of the scheme).

This is one case where it’s a good thing that it is done in a foreign language. With subtitles, you don’t miss any of the dialog! Missed dialog is definitely a problem with some English or Scottish movies, and even in non-foreign films where the words sometimes get drowned out by the background noise.

A cursory knowledge of current events in Argentina might make for a better understanding or appreciation of the plot, but I don’t think it’s required.

As I think back (I saw it maybe a month ago) I think there were some individual “plot points” that I still wasn’t sure of or that seemed not to make complete sense, but I can’t remember what they were. It could be that I just didn’t “get” all the connections, etc., or maybe there were some plot holes, but either way, I still enjoyed the movie.
