I hiked up Half Dome for the second time and was just as terrified on the cables as before. The view, though, more than made up for it. There are just no words nor can photos convey the majesty of the view. You just have to see it for yourself.
I’ve done that too. I wore a safety harness and clipped on to the cable, but I was the only one. Not one other person even had safety gear. For those who need to see pictures of the dreaded cablewalk, click here and here to see my pictures.
it certainly is worth the view…especially if there’s naked people at the top when you get there.
Wow! I had no idea that you could hike up there with cables for pro. Definitely going on my to do list.

Plan to spend an entire day. It takes a long time to get there, and a long time to get back. Pack light, but take plenty of water. You will get to see Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls close up. I recommend a safety harness and a caribiner to clip on to the cable. If you take two, you will never be untethered.
The cables are up from May to October IIRC.
I went last October. That’s why there are so few people there. I have heard that big weekends, like Memorial Day, are bad times to go. There are too many people on the cables. If you’re safely tethered in, and some guy falls one hundred and fifty feet into you, you’re going to die. I didn’t feel the terror of the OP, but I did respect the dangers. Climbing up the cablewalk you’re quite exposed on both sides. It’s literally thousands of feet down.
One tough part of the ascent is a bit that comes right before the cablewalk itself. The rock is carved out into a sort of stairway that seems to go on forever.
The big payoff is the summit. I was surprised at the amount of room up there. It’s at least as big as four football fields.
Thanks!
Wow. I forgot how scared of heights I was until I saw that second picture that Forbin linked to. So…people walk basically vertically up this thing? What if the cable ripped out?! How do you get down?
Ha ha!
Did you ever watch Batman with Adam West when you were a kid?
Did you ever see the Dynamic Duo climb buildings?
It’s like that.
I should have mentioned that I have a fear of heights. The only reason I went up was I was with a group of friends from the local running club and got LOTS of support. Going up is not so bad if you look at the rock but going down you look down and back at your feet and cant help but see the drop.
You went down backwards?
I went forwards.
