I was also struck by Willie’s “girl” comment. I’m just numbstruck by his crassness since Iowa. You can’t be “ready on DAY ONE ™” and be “Just a Girl” at the same time.
It will be interesting to see how this affects her poll numbers. At first I thought this story has no legs, but it does make for damning and compelling video.
You know, that’s one thing that just blows me away about this campaign. I cannot believe that these two politically tone-deaf buffoons are the power couple who outmaneuvered the media and an entrenched incumbent in 1992, again outmaneuvered the media and a vengeful Republican party in 1996, and managed to come out of a sordid, nasty impeachment fight with more public sympathy than they had going in in 1998. These two are completely different people who don’t appear to have ever actually run any sort of major campaign before.
This clip of that trip to Bosnia makes her look Presidential. So here’s this controversy about whether there was sniper fire and the footage is up on YouTube. She looks like Commander-In-Chief. How many other YouTube viewers (who aren’t Dopers) will get that perception?
I think they’re the same people they’ve always been but technology (blogs, web video, etc.) is exposing them to an unprecedented degree.
Once upon a time they could pull these kinds of shenanigans with impunity because their comments rarely found their way outside their intended audience. It’s a different situation now and everybody around the country has access to what they’re saying.
It still hasn’t dawned on them that virtually anything they say can (and most likely will) be circulated to the public at large.
They’re behind the times and it’s catching up with them. (There’s a Yogi-ism if I ever heard one. )
Just goes to show (again) how not very bright she actually is. Had she played up this aspect of her trip to Bosnia; the fact that she arranged this trip herself, that she did this as a way to thank the troops and brought along Sinbad and Sheryl Crow to entertain them as one way of showing that, that she toured a front line outpost (deeper than Bill got when he visited), etc., she would have had an excellent story to tell. But instead, she opted to highlight a part of her trip that was uneventful, and embellish it with outright lies. When the truth is good enough, why would she do this? Well, IMO, because that’s what liars do – they never think the truth is good enough.
What galls me is that the Clintons, Ivy league grads both, are the smartest people in any room they are in. He’s the smartest President that has ever sat in the oval office, and she’d ready from ‘day one.’ Just ask them or their supporters. But he doesn’t know what the definition of ‘is is’ and she can’t remember if her only daughter was actually shot at in front of her. Amazing how quickly that transition from brilliant to misspoke takes place!
No kidding. What’s he gonna do next, speak of Obama as “that nice colored boy”?
What the heck happened to Slick Willie? He used to be good at campaigning. Hell, it’s all he ever did. Now he’s spouting off this kind of tone-deaf shit.
How are the mighty fallen, along with their drawers.
Hah! I agree. There are many presidents who were smarter, many with a better moral compass, and a good many that were more consequential - but few with bigger egos.
If you’d told me a year ago that Shodan and I would have roughly identical opinions about the Clintons, I’d have thought you were absolutely out of your mind.
I think the thing is that prior to internet technology evolving to the degree it has, and becoming as widely accessible as it is, people only heard of these sorts of things on Rush Limbaugh and a few other right-wing media sources. I remember Rush Limbaugh railing about these sorts of things back in '91 and '92 when Clinton was first running for president.
But given that these stories came from obviously right-wing sources, they were disregarded as biased, out of context, or just flat lied about.
Now, everyone can see for themselves what these two are really like and it’s a revelation to them.
I should be ideologically incapable of saying this, but I think you’re right. Watching the Clintons in the last three or four months, and thinking about the amount of energy I spent in the 90s defending them from the Right…
A question to you of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy[sup]TM[/sup]: What if the Limbaugh brigade had eschewed the foam-at-the-mouth over-the-top hostility that set up liberals’ backs? What if they’d made their arguments against the Clintons with clear evidence but without the red-meat hysteria? Is it possible that the VRWC might actually have been able to get out their message if it hadn’t been reeking of the sewer?
VRWC folks are entertainers first, remember. More mud = higher ratings. Also, the fact that Newt rode that wave to a Republican takeover of congress unfortunately gave a reason to stay IN the deep trenches, rather than getting out.
Mud and blood works - we get the campaigns and government that we deserve.
I know difficult it is to have to admit something like this. On the occasion that I’ve been arsed to have to do so myself, I’ve found that a good dose of pancake syrup helps it to go down a bit easier.
I hope my comments above also help to explain why so many of us on the right have so thoroughly detested the Clintons all these years.
