Hmm… maybe SHE planned the WTC tragedy! And she looked unhappy because she only got 6,000 people! Or, or, or… maybe she hoaxed the Moon landings, too! I think Seethruart was on to something… I’m sure his website included a picture of Hillary’s face in a cloud…
Last night I agree Hillary looked like she was sucking on a lemon. However, the topic was pretty somber. Declaring war, especially one that is bound to be very costly (both in human and economic terms), is a very sobering thing. And while I think it was absolutely essential that Congress shows its solidarity for the world to see, I also think it’s okay to look grim when we do it. I’m sure others looked the same. Hillary just stood out because: 1) she’s recognizable; 2) she’s a woman; and 3) she’s a blonde in a sea of grey and shiny heads.
Well, to be fair, I always have an angry pissed off expression-at least, that’s what people tell me. I can’t help it. I don’t do it on PURPOSE. People in high school always threatened me and told me not to give them dirty looks. I was like, da’hell? It’s just my face, that’s all. I’m sorry I always look so pissed and/or depressed.
The topic may have been somber but it’s odd she was the only one looking that way. Is it because she cares more than the others? Or is she just trying to give the impression that she cares more than others?
She had the look on her face that you would expect at a State of the Union Address, not at a bipartisan gathering.
Tony Blair’s wife (whom I keep wanting to call Linda) also had a very sour look on her face. Not a “this is a serious moment look” but an “I can’t believe the whole office has to be at this stupid sensitivity training seminar” look.
Typical republicans, we just spent 8 years where nothing had a higher priority for them than going after clinton. Wasn’t it Lott who declared that one could support the troops without supporting the president? Now that they are in they think the democrats are evil for having less than adoring facial expressions.
It is difficult to judge the significance pf body language in person, judging it from a few momentary shots on television is little more than a rorshach test for your preconceptions.
Interpretation of someone else’s emotional body language is often strongly influenced by our own. Was she sour or somber? Was she grim and determined or petulant and pissed off? Unless the senator has taken one of you into her confidence, nobody here knows.
Individual aestehtic perception is strongly influenced by emotional factors. “Aesthetic objectivity” is an oxymoron.
The irony behind a PIT thread criticizing someone for not showing public unity is too thick to see through, anyway.
Now, Senator Clinton’s comments on Larry King are a different matter. I did not watch, as I find King to be the most singly annoying sycophantic pustule on the behind of the American media, but perhaps one of those folks criticizing her for her answers could post exerpts/transcripts.
After the speech I was wondering what her problem was. I saw the camera cut over to her 3 times during the speech (what was up with that anyway?). The first time she was chatting with the guy next to her, the next two she just had the appearance of someone who couldn’t wait to get out of there. At one point I could have sworn I saw her roll her eyes, but I didn’t tape it go back and check so I could be wrong. I was almost expecting in the next shot of her she’d be checking her watch or yawning or something.
I sure hope it was just bad timing with the camera.
I had to listen to the speech while driving, so I didn’t see anything Hillary Clinton may have done. However, when I got home, my wife (who saw the speech) made a big deal about how Hillary Clinton rolled her eyes and looked pissy during President Bush’ speech.
Now, my wife cares little about politics, and has no political axe to grind. So for her to come out and comment on HC’s demeanor says a lot to me. Hillary Clinton must have been just about over-the-top in vitriolic demeanor for my wife to notice.
But I admittedly have to accept that observation second-hand.
Predictably, of course, the defense of HC comes from the left, and the jabs come from the right. In such cases of a partisan tie, the right prevails – at least for me.
Now, if a conservative comes on this board and says “Hey! HC was just caught at a bad moment!” – then that would be something for me to consider.
Still in all, when you boil it all down, it really doesn’t matter what HC’s face looks like. Let’s hold out for a bit and pay attention to what she eventually DOES as a Senator.
Something else I just considered – is it possible that HC was displaying aggravation that the camera was trained on her overmuch, maybe? Was HC PO’d because the cameramen seemed to be trying INENTIONALLY to portray her in a bad light?
But are the cameras close enough for individual persons in attendance to KNOW they’re being watched? Search me …

I like Hillary. I REALLY like her. If she ran for president, I’d vote for her, even though I’m not a Democrat. From what I’ve seen and read in the past, I could BE a male version of her, if you rearranged her political beliefs a bit.

But I thought there was something odd about her demeanor, too. I commented on it to my girlfriend, and she, a liberal-leaning person, agreed with me.
But I could be wrong. I guess I’ll have to agree with Spiritus and say tat one can’t tell. But it sure seemed like she was being dismissive and rude about the president’s remarks.
Two, in the House chamber filled to overflowing with 100 senators, more than 400 Representatives, The Justices of the Supreme Court, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Cabinet Officers, foreign dignitaries, including the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, survivors of victims, NYC firefighters and police officers, the Mayor of NYC, the Governor of NY and Lord knows who else, why on earth do we get not less than three head shots of the junior Senator from NY? Sen. Clinton got damn near as much camera time as the Mayor. Did we see the senior Senator from NY? Did we see any of the Representatives from NYC? Why the special attention to Sen. Clinton?
Three, is a little objectivity around here going to kill anybody?
Or maybe she was very grumpy during his speech because, like myself, she wasn’t pleased with vitriolic warmongering rhetoric and the fact that everyone clapped like mechanical monkeys with symbols tied to their hands whenever Bush said something that could most easily be translated as “BLOOOOOOOOOODDDDD!!!”
I mean, I personally heard that speech as, “Blood, American People fight for freedom, blood blood, and blood, pakistan, blood blood blood blood, afghanistan, Tony Blair England wants blood too, blood blood blood.”
MAYBE JUST MAYBE she was thinking for herself and wasn’t happy with what she was hearing. But no, that’s probably not possible since everyone knows that bloodlust is the right emotion right now. A nonpartisan congress singing songs on the steps of the capital, badly tells us so.
Just to be fair and let you know, I am not partisan. In fact Democrats and Republicans are equally shit. I think Hillary is shit, I think Giulliani is shit (though I like him right now) I think pataki is shit, I think Bush is shit, I think Joe Lieberman is shit, I think Al Gore is shit, I think John Ashcroft is shit.
So with all this shit flowing from the capitol no wonder we are going to fuck ourselves over so willingly.
So fuck your partisanship and FUCK GEORGE BUSH for being a goddamn warmonger.
Incidentally Ralph Nader is shit also.
Erek
In all fairness I like some on either side too, Bill Clinton, Colin Powell and a few others but the long line of shit stretches like a Soviet Breadline and the ones I like could go through the express aisle.
I thought she looked ragged, exhausted and worn out. She looked like she hasn’t stopped crying for 9 days straight. So maybe she doesn’t wear her exhaustion well. So what? You wanted her to be a glamour queen after all this tragedy?
