A vast right wing conspiracy of cameramen???
She is a Senator from NEW YORK for crying out loud! If she didn’t think that the cameras would be trying to pick up her reaction, and that of Senator Schumer next to whom she was sitting, then she is a moron.
I do think the OP was over the top but to suggest that the media is out to get her is absurd.
Yeah, that God Bless America is just rife with bloodlust imagery, isn’t it.
minty green wants a cite. OK.
Her demeanour during the President’s speech was a cite onto itself. (/Clever pun).
According to the transcripts of the Larry King Show (which may NOT yet be accurate according to a disclaimer posted there), when asked **what she expected from President Bush **tomorrow (this was the day before his address) she offered:
These glib words, when coupled with her apparent utter of lack of sincerity, stroke me as evasive and uninvolved. She was asked what she expected of the president and ended up talking about herself.
When asked about Giuliani, about her feeling on proposed legislation to extend his term, she said:
She made it seem as if the ‘keep Giuliani movement’ would be breaking the law, subverting democracy. Even if she really felt this way, she could have acknowledged why there is such a movement afoot. Instead, she used cliches - they may be true, but are patronizing to have been stated in this context (“respect for the rule of the law”, “we have to believe in democracy”)
You misinterpret me. I don’t think the media is out to get her. What I said was that perhaps she was nonplussed because of the actions of an individual cameraman – as opposed to the entire media. One cameraman != the media at large.
And of that I am completely unsure. After all, I don’t know if those in the chamber could even make out where cameramen were even pointing. I was just speculating.
Whatever explanation there may be, good or bad, there is a definite perception by many (well here at work and listening on the radio) that Hillary was acting like she had a bug up her butt.
Jesus Fucking A Christ!
This thread is about a few seconds of reaction shots of HRC!?!
Holy shit, do you fucking make snap fucking judgements of everone you know that way too?!?
(btw I love the language of the pit)
It would be another story if your ass was in the chamber last night and for some stupid reason you watched her all night. Who the fuck knows whether she smiled at other times, pumped her fist, or crossed the aisle to give bear hugs to the Republicans.
Who the fuck cares. It wasn’t a motherfucking pep rally.
She didn’t shake Bush’s hand!!!
Granted I didn’t watch last night (and so I’m writing from a fresh prespective) but from prior Presidential speeches, there is a huge crush to shake the President’s hand as he leaves.
Once in Washington, in the late 1980’s, I had the chance to shake Gorbachev’ hand in a similar situation. No fuckin way - I shook dead air.
Maybe HRC should have beat the shit out the people near her so she could have gotten that firm handshake you want.
Christ!
Or is it IMHO, you. Yeah you, whether you hate HRC and/or pants-down Bill or not.
Is it because you consider any woman who is not constantly wearing a Barbie (Katie Couric) grin (or an occasional coy pout) as a bitch?
Sorry didn’t watch the speech myself - heard it was great. Did see film of Roosevelt’s December 8 speech - he didn’t smile once. Nor did Maggie when she sent the fleet to the Falklands.
Oh well, guess it does give something for fat boy Rush to talk about on the radio today.
dos centavos

Gee Karl; reading those quotations I can see now where you’re coming from. Why, in the course of one interview, HRC praised Bush for deciding to address Congress and the country, reaffirmed her support for the President and then had the nerve to follow up with praise for Guiliani (who she implied was a “superb” person doing a “great” job), coupled with respect for democracy and the rule of law.
What an insincere, spiteful bitch.
[/sarcasm]
Karl, you are * kidding, *aren’t you? You have to be. Because if that’s your evidence for how evil she is, then your hatred for her has made you blind.
What exactly is it you would prefer she do? Check her brain and her heart at the door? What sort of answer were you looking for?
You know what? Never mind. Any answer she gave wouldn’t have been right. If she’d given her laundry list of expectations for Bush, she would have been a controlling bitch with an agenda. If she’d jumped in and clapped her hands gleefully promising to sponsor legislation to overturn term limits, she would have been a gutless waffler who would do ride any wave to get get re-elected.
stoid
still seriously fed up
I didn’t watch the speech on TV. At lunch a few minutes ago a co-worker made about the same point Karl Gauss did (without the skillful vituperation), and another co-worker agreed with him.
Black is white! White is black! We’re through the looking glass, people!
Karl, what the FUCK are you complaining about?
Well, I guess that proves it then.
 Stoid and I share a political opinion! Stop the presses!
Seriously. I missed the speech last night, but if she was there, didn’t “boo” and “hiss”, showed respect to the office (by standing up at the appropriate moments, clapping, etc) then she has done her duty as a Senator. Enthusiasm is not required. Respect is, and nothing in Karl’s post was blatently disrespectful.
And the one interview I saw on CNN (on 9/11) was extremely classy. I think it’s the one Xeno referenced.
I don’t like the Senator’s positions on most issues and I don’t even particularly like her, but from what I’ve seen she’s handled herself well during this situation.

Aargh. Delete that line and substitute:
“Respect is, and nothing in Karl’s post indicated that Sen. Clinton was being disrespectful.”
I wonder if I can pull a Mu-Shu and blame the typo on the Mods?

Ok. My point is that she should have known that the damn camera would have been pointing at her at some time. The speech was only forty minutes long. She should try and look engaged by the speech if for no other reason than her own PR. (Anyone who has been in a job interview is probably familiar with feigning interest for a similar period of time.)

He said he saw it, but said it was silly to try to ascribe motives. Sorry to disappoint.

Faced with such witty sarcasm, Reality hangs her head in shame and slinks away.
Just want to add that another woman that appeared a little grumpy at the speech was Laura Bush. She had a big-ol’ frown on when the camera caught her.
However, since I feel fairly confident she wasn’t actually mad at her husband, it seems reasonable to find another explanation. My take on it is that she’s a woman most often called upon to smile a lot. She’s pretty good at it. In a situation like last night, though, smiling would have been inappropriate. She hasn’t had as much practice with the nuances of the non-smiling expressions, so it didn’t come off as a good reflection of her actual feelings about the speech. She just needs more practice (Let’s hope she doesn’t get much.).
I think the same explanation can be applied to Mrs. Clinton.
This thread is UNBELIEVABLE. According to furt, not even Rush Limbaugh found fault in Hillary’s actions.
It’s amazing the way preconceptions cloud one’s judgement.
I walked toward an arabic man the other day. It was sunny and I was squinting. I thought that he might think I was scowling at him. I made a point to smile and say hi. Attitudes can cloud perceptions.
If this is the best “bashing” you folks can come up with, it’s time to sell the farm.
Hillary is an ice queen. I have seen several of her speeches on C-Span (pre-Sept 11) and have been surprised by her poor oratorical skills. She is very mechanical and speaks in a monotone.
