Hip Hop Videos

I watched some MTV the other day and was treated to a run of hip hop videos. Could they possibly be any more misogynistic/materialistic? Every last video was almost exactly the same - half naked girls dancing behind some guy with a big gold watch on a yacht. At least show some creativity. Blech.

Surely you have more vitriol than that? I mean, come on, show some creativity.

You could just do what I do, and hit the mute button.

Mr. Moto made a funny

I remember the early videos. Then it was the Metal Babes.

Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert never had these problems.

You can get a DVD compilation of music videos made by Spike Jonez. Some really cool stuff on there, but mixed in with all the Weezer and Breeders and Daft Punk videos, there’s one for Notorious B.I.G. In a way, it’s my favorite of the lot. It’s a cookie-cutter rap video. Big cars, obnoxious bling, lotsa hos… except everyone is portrayed by kids. It’s a bunch of twelve year olds running around in fur coats and Cadillacs, pretending like they’re all grown up. It really threw me at first, until I realized that it’s actually meant as a criticism of the rap artists who recorded the song in the first place: a bunch of children running around with too much money. Fucking brilliant, and the best part is, they’ve probably got no idea that they’re being spoofed by Jonez.

I’ve never really understood the cries of sexism regarding rap videos. A while back, I was watching Oprah and she had the cast of Crash on to discuss racism in our society.

While discussing whether or not it is even ok to think the “n-word,” Oprah turned to Ludacris and started mauling him with the claws of 10000 wild bears on crack for using the “n-word” in his raps. Then suddenly, she started tearing into him for rapping about bitches and hoes as well. Luda just sort of sat there and took it- I mean, it’s Oprah. What could he have done? He could hardly get a word in edge-wise as it was. Oprah kept going on and on about how degrades women by calling them bitches and hoes- and how he degrades them more by having them dance damn near naked in his videos.

I thought for a moment and I came to my enlightened conclusion: so long as women are willing to dance naked in videos, then there will be bitches and hoes. So long as women are willing to suck the dick of the stage hand just to get backstage to possibly make out with her friend then suck Luda’s dick. . . there will be bitches and hoes.

So, until the day comes when women stop lowering themselves, then damnit: he can call them bitches and hoes and take advantage of it.

Am I offended by the degradation of women in rap? Fuck no. Why? I’m not the type of the women that they’re rapping about.

DiosaBellissima, you rock.

“Man, the last twenty-eight videos have sucked. Maybe the next one will be good.” —Life in Hell by Matt Groening (paraphrased)

I wonder what their IQ is.

Well, I’m offended that the people who believe that all men are into the objectification of women have so much material available upon which to base their stereotype. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to convince women that nice guys do exist. It’s hard to say how much of an effect the media actually has on that stereotype, however.

Or show us some half-naked girls.

Women know nice guys exist. They just generally find them to be boring scolds.

You should solve this problem by choosing to be nice only some of the time. Choose your moments carefully now.

You can’t objectify the willing.

Pretty low I would guess.

Nice guys do exist, even in music videos. Just take a look at The Beastie Boys’ “You Gotta Fight” video. Those nice young men are contemplating a party where they’ll serve soda and pie. Such nice young men.

Sure you can. Sometimes people like to think they are making a choice, when in reality, they are doing the only thing they know to do.
I’ll expound upon it later.

Okay, so let’s say you’re correct. A woman lowering or degrading herself only thinks she’s making a choice, when in reality, she is doing the only thing she knows how to do. Well, actions speak louder than words. It is what we do that defines us. A woman who acts promiscuous is promiscuous. That is what she is and if you ask her about it, she will give you reasons for why she acts the way she does. That those reasons are incorrect is irrelevant, because she’s still acting in accordance with what she percieves to be her will. If someone were to force her to act in a degrading manner against her will, that would be objectification. Cite. But, as you said, even if the woman regards herself as something that, were we to be described as such, would make us feel insulted, it is, as you said, the only thing she knows how to do.

Excellent point, but let’s take it further back. Why are all these very attractive, talented (in the case of singers and dancers) young women willing to objectify themselves? (Let’s look deeper than the obvious “for the money.”)

Not as high as I am and not as low as my rims, son!

In green underpants.

Well, it’s a little known fact but there is only one hip hop video. They just keep recycling it by digitally inserting shots of a different rapper at various points in the video.
