The French speaking part of Canada has always been very much dominated by the Catholic Church, even after the British took over. I wonder if there ever was a sizable number of French speaking Protestants (Huguenots) living in Québec during the 17th, 18th and 19th century.
Any Protestant community would’ve developed after the British took over Canada; Huguenots were not allowed to set foot in New France.
A young Wilfrid Laurier got in trouble in his rhetoric class in his Jesuit-run school days by making a compelling speech that the French government should have allowed Huguenots to emigrate to New France.
His Jesuit teachers were not amused.
