HL2 Deathmatch: how to NOT dl sounds

Look, I appreciate your attempts at exposing me to generic rock. Really. But I have a tub of store-brand vanilla ice milk in the freezer, and if I want to hear something that bland I’ll throw a glob of it against the wall.

I also appreciate your attempts at humor. Yes, that belch sound would give me chuckles to no end. Hardee-har-har. And playing it over and over again, why, how else would I know that you are twelve? I also appreciate your originality in quoting such obscure movies such as Office Space and the Holy Grail. Endlessly.

But alas, do you see what’s in my hand? A crowbar. A shiny, not-so-happy crowbar. Why is it shiny? Because it’s not bloody. Why not-so-happy? Because it’s not bloody. Why is it not bloody? Because instead of just downloading a map or two, DM is stuck downloading WAV after WAV of inane sounds, taking up useless space on my drive, wasting my time, and generally annoying the shit out of me. Mommy make it stop!!!

Check this out: Disable Sounds [Counter-Strike: Source] [Tutorials]

Instructions are for CS:S, but you can adapt them for HL2DM.

Stuff like that is especially annoying in mods like Day of Defeat.

Wow… just wow. Thank you so much for finding that. I can’t go a-cleaving at the moment, but I just fired up Steam and loaded map after glorious map in moments rather than minutes. Just wow.

For reference, here’s how the link applies to HL2 Deathmatch.

Open “Config.cfg” in a text editor (e.g., Notepad or Wordpad)
For me, it was located in C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps*ENTER YOUR OWN PLAYER NAME**\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\cfg
This was the default location for me… if you installed it anywhere else, follow the path after Valve.

Scroll/ctrl-end to the end of the file and paste

cl_downloadfilter “nosounds”
cl_showpluginmessages “0”

Save and start the game. No wait for each map.

My next killing spree will be in your name, control-z – thanks!

No problem. I went through this same sort of thing in early versions of CounterStrike and Day of Day of Defeat. When you’re on a modem you don’t want to spend 15 minutes downloading stupid sounds.
