Holes in crackers

Why do they put holes in saltine crackers?? Is it so they can increase their profits by using slightly less cracker material?? It kinda bugs me because when I make a peanut butter cracker sandwich, the pb gets all over me…

It’s so they cook all the way through. In a shorter amount of time.

Also to prevent them puffing up like a pitta bread when baked.

Also so you can spread them with butter and vegemite, and push them together and make “worms”.

Mange tout has it right. Cracker dough is layered, like puff pastry. The holes nail down the layers, so they won’t blister up.
