What goes best on saltines?

I love saltine crackers. With Peanut butter, with cheese, with salami and cheese.

I dont care so much just for butter, however.

What is your favorite cracker toppings?

Peanut butter (Skippy Chunky).

I also like Merkts spreadable cheese, though I feel like that goes better on Ritz or Wheat Thins.

This is going to sound wrong, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it…mayonnaise. I’m not some kind of mayo-loving freak, but seriously. With a nice salty cracker, the grease and the tanginess = hell yeah! I could eat a sleeve of crackers like that.

Definitely peanut butter (smooth).

The teeniest sardines you can find, maybe with a dash of hot sauce.

Smoked oysters.

Salmon dip.

As far as crackers and toppings go, I generally don’t find soda crackers to be particularly suited. A nice Town house or Club cracker are ideal for the purpose. Saltines are much better suited to be served with soups than for use as hors d’oeuvres.
That said Ritz crackers are not always at hand and in such cases I find saltines with plain real butter adequate.

Yes, I used to like sardines on crackers, I will have to try that again.

Saltines with the hottest, fiercest horseradish you can find.

Liverwurst.

Yeah, not a big fan of saltines. Haven’t eaten any in decades. I like Wheat Thins and Triscuits or a decent water biscuit. Wheat Thins with a good real butter are yummy.

Are there people who put butter on saltines? That sounds weird. I’ve had peanut butter, or hard cheese or even the spray cheese on them.

I’ve put butter on saltines, but like I said it was in the deep dark past. I prefer a cracker with some flavor if I’m using butter.

I love butter. My mom bought margarine when I was growing up. Once I had to stay at my grandma’s house for a short while. She gave me toast and jam (and butter). I told my mom afterward that grandma had the best tasting jam! Turned out it wasn’t the jam. It was the butter. I’ve never purchased margarine since I’ve been paying for my own food.

My father has always done this. (He also used to put butter on Oreos…eeeeew.)

Yeah, butter on saltines was pretty normal. Used to do it all the time as a kid on the rare occasion my folks would take us out to a restaurant/diner. Hell, I’d butter the melba crackers and sesame sticks as well!

Sardines. Olive bruschetta.

Raises hand. I butter them and stack them three high. But only with real butter.

I also like them with both butter and peanut butter. Give it a try. Used to love crackers with sardines or with kipper snacks. I also like them with tuna salad or just crumbled in a bowl of tomato soup.

Tuna salad.

I serve them with chili, but I like to top a cracker with a generous spoonful of spicy chili and a pinch of Monterey jack, and then eat it.

Oh, yeah. I still do that from time to time, but it has to be on 'normal" salted saltine crackers. If I’m feeling fancy I might also put a little dab of jam or jelly on top. Give me that and a small glass of whole milk and I’m happy.

I remembered too late to include in my post upthread, but I remember one of my friend’s father when he used to take us fishing or camping would cook hamburgers and onions in a skillet, but we ate them with saltines; never on buns with ketchup or whatever.

You’d break a piece of the meat patty and eat it, and kinda’ “shovel” the onions and whatever loose bits of meat onto a cracker, or just eat some of each separately.

It was good, as I remember.
