This has been a bad week.
Yes, my mother has shingles. She is in a great deal of pain, and the rash has started breaking out. She is very weak, and nauseous, but the hospital would not let her stay another night. So we went home Saturday afternoon.
But our furnace, which is old, old, old, stopped working Friday night. It is bitter cold in the house. I called a repair guy Saturday after having spent all morning with mother at the hospital, and they said that just to come out would cost $130, and he knows that he doesn’t have any of the parts necessary to repair our furnace and they won’t have the capability of getting any till Monday, so I said okay, we’ll deal.
I then made reservations for a motel for us to stay at Saturday and Sunday nights, since it’s impossible to stay in the house overnight. We chose this motel because Mother and Dad had stayed there before, and they liked it. But it obviously has gone down hill since then. We got two adjoining rooms, but we could only get rooms on the second floor, which meant my 88 year old mother having to negotiate the stairs up to her room. I got her settle in her room, and then went into mine, next door. First off, the TV didn’t work, all I got was static. And secondly, there were no towels. I tried to call the front desk, but I could find nothing that would tell me what number to call to reach the front desk. So I got an outside line and called the front desk on their outside number, but nobody would answer the phone. My sisters told me that they had tried to call to talk to my mother, and they, too, got nobody to answer the phone.
So I walked down to the front desk and he gave me a key to the next room over, and I took it. Got there and it, too, had no towels. At least the TV worked. But, as I went to call the front desk, I discovered that this room had no phone. So I walked back to the front desk, told them I could live without a phone, but I needed towels. He promised I would get them.
I didn’t believe him, so I went home to check on the house and feed the cat, and picked up some towels from home. When I got back to the motel, there were police blocking off the entrance with lights flashing. I drove to the parking lot next door and drove around to the back to see if there was some entrance to the motel from back there. There wasn’t. But what there was there was a police car sitting in the dark with its lights out. When I drove back there, he shined his spotlight on me, so I got out of my car, hands in the air, and asked if there was some way I could get into the motel since my 88 year old mother was there by herself.
The cop told me no, they were doing an operation at the motel and I would have to stay away. So I drove to a nearby Starbucks, only to find it closed at 7 PM on a Saturday night! I drove around for a while, until the police opened up the parking lot, and I drove in past a long line of police cars.
I went to my room and stayed there for the rest of the night. At one point, after I had gone to sleep, I woke up to the sound of police on their loudpseakers ordering people out of their rooms individually. There were police dogs barking. This went on for about half an hour.
This morning I got up and went to check on my mother. She is not doing any better, says she threw up all night, is in a great deal of pain, and did not sleep.
We went home, but it’s just too cold to stay here in the cold, so I went out and bought two space heaters. I set up one in the kitchen to cover the kitchen and dining room, and set up the other in the living room. While I was fixing lunch in the microwave, the circuit breaker tripped. We can’t run the space heater and the microwave at the same time.
We are planning on going back to the motel tonight to sleep, but we won’t go there till late.
Maybe we can get the furnace repaired tomorrow? Uggghhh
