The next time I’m ordering a beer, and all my choices are crappy light beers, make mine a Bud Light.
Why?
Because Bud Light is the official sponsor of Orlando Gay Days. Yes, Bud Light, of the “Real Men of Genius” campaign. My chances of ever attending the celebration are not very high, what with my not being gay or living in Orlando. But the sponsorship makes me happy, and next time I get a chance*, I’ll show my appreciation with my own dollars.
*“chance” here means that I need to have no other choices than light beers. I’m not going to drink Bud Light over Sam Adams just to make the point – I have standards. But it is my new favorite light beer. Which is kind of like having a favorite kind of dental procedure – they all suck, just some less than others. And to be honest, I dunno if Bud Light sucks any less tastewise, but I like the statement their sponsorship makes. Gosh, this is a long footnote.
Good for Bud supporting the Orlando Gay Days, but to be honest, both Bud and Miller have been sponsoring Gay Pride events for many, many years now. Even Coors is starting to get into the act. It seems they discovered that Gays and Lesbians drink beer in themthere queer bars, and it didn’t take a whole lot of research to determine a hell of a lot of beer is sold in those establishments.
Back when I lived in West Hollywood, Bud and Miller were fighting to get the business and one rep from Miller told me the Gay bars in West Hollywood were a huge market share of beer sales in the greater LA area!
There’s nothing like spending a summer day on a hard bleacher seat crunching your nuts … unless it’s sitting behind home plate spreading mustard on your weiner
Years ago, I got to know Holly Coors while she was a student at a private school where I was teaching. A very intelligent, down-to-earth young woman, we had a chance to discuss the Coors policies. Her comment was that most of her family was appalled at her uncle’s politics (he was CEO at the time) and she let me know in no uncertain terms that things would change sooner than later.
Sure enough, that same Holly Coors is now the first female CEO of the brewing company and things certainly have changed. I don’t doubt the sincerity of Coors’ new pro-Gay rights policy one bit, especially knowing Holly has her grip on the reigns.
I know I am in the minority here, but I am willing to give Coors another chance and feel confident this is not all some phony attempt at being PC.
