If I may inject a note of undue seriousness into the conversation…One element that seems to me to be a difference in the approaches of (heterosexual) men and women to an attractive member of the appropriate sex is that – and this is of course a generalization – men want to know the name of the object of their interest, whereas women may admire the person or image in a distant sort of way but they’re not serious about wanting to know the name or form any sort of even the most miniscule, temporary attachment. It’s not just a matter of wanting to Google the chick later – guys always want to know who that chick is, what’s her name? Women tend more toward “the poolboy is cute.”

I’m not really sure why this should be this way (assuming for the sake of argument I’m onto something). Maybe it’s because men are more used to having to make the effort of pursuit, and even someone they will never meet and have no chance of pursuing still triggers their impulse to gather data about any possible love interest, even if fantasy. **The female approach is more realistic, of course.

Edit: this very thread provides an example – some of the men are asking “who is that? I must know,” and Sleeps with Butterflies is calling her “a halfway decent looking girl on the internet” even after the name is known.

Wow Sailboat, I think you’re on to something. For years I have heard that “insert male name” asked who I was. I always thought it was to bring a quicker sense of familiarity, as in they could begin a conversation by addressing me by name.

When I asked my husband if he was attracted to me before we were introduced, he replied, “Well I asked x who you were”. I never quite understood that before. It didn’t really answer my question - but it signified he had some interest in me - I guess it makes sense that it’s data gathering.

That would make a really interesting study (assuming one hasn’t been done already).

A stereotypical blond has super white skin (or fake tanned) with bright blond hair. Think someone from Scandinavia or, for the tanned version, try something like this.

Most of the time I can find a pretty unflattering picture of the girls you guys go gaga for, but not this girl. Even her more candid shots look great.
