I think I had heard her name, but didn’t know anything about her, until a few weeks ago, on the 75th anniversary of V-E Day, when I saw several articles (and a story on BBC World News) about her, and that she was, at that time, still alive.
I thought by now she was immortal. She was so great. It’s sad but at least we have her music.
I’m not old enough to remember her in her heyday, I’m an American - not a Brit, and was never aware of the Pink Floyd song, but I do know who Vera Lynn was. My parents had a couple of her records and I have the CD Vera Lynn Remembers - The Songs That Won World War 2 on a nearby shelf - right next to Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich.
Oddly, I never heard of Vera-Ellen until reading this thread, even though Google tells me that I’ve seen lots of the movies she was in.
Or Dr. Strangelove
Weird. Just yesterday I succumbed to click bait along the lines of “look how old these women look” and one listed was Vera Lynn. I did the usual “I didn’t know she was still alive.”
