Holy Smokes, Vera Lynn is Still Alive!

Link, for some reason this amazes me, in a good way. Should have her out if she can make it for all the VE stuff over there, hope the Brits are giving her a fat pension or something. :slight_smile:

Well, she did say we would meet again…

Please tell me I’m not the only one to think “Hmm, got to start making notes for the 2008 Deathpool somtime!”

Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn?

You mean literally, during her heyday?

Huh, I was thinking not so much her heyday as some summer day.

Daniel

I instantly thought it was Vera Ellen

Pink Floyd reference.

However, there are a few Dopers who are old enough to remember her during her heyday.

Hell, I remember Jenny Lind.

Ahh, good grief, whooshed me. Well played sir.

Remember how she said that
We would meet again
Some sunny day.
Vera! Vera!
What has become of you?
Does anybody else in here
Feel the way I do?

Of course! Jenny Lind! How could I have forgotten Jenny Lind? If anyone deserves to be remembered, it’s Jenny Lind! Just one question though, Eve: Who’s Jenny Lind?

Just kidding. I looked her up.

Good one, Eve.

OMG! According to Wikipedia, Jenny Lind is still alive.

No, just kidding, she died a long time ago. Made you look though.

…never to be confused with the great dancer in movie musicals, Vera-Ellen.

In fact, many years ago my friend Arthur, a lyricist, came up with this little poem when there was rampant confusion between the two Veras back in 1999 over at rec.arts.theatre.musicals.

"Perhaps this will help.

 A Child's Guide to the Veras

*Vera-Ellen, Vera Lynn –
One is not the other’s twin.
Vera Lynn or Vera-Ellen?
There’s a simple way of tellin’:
Vera-E. is always dubbed;
VL’s voice is never subbed.
V-E dances, blithe and gay;
VL sings on VE Day.
White things rouse their choicest riffs:
V-E’s Christmas, VL’s Cliffs.
E’s a Yankee, L’s a Brit;
Each a nation’s favorite.
Vera-Ellen, Vera Lynn –
One is not the other’s twin.

That’s how I can remember Vera Lynn. Who I’ve just heard is still alive!

You can probably guess why this thread is back.

RIP Vera Lynn.

Well she outlived the OP I guess.

The fact that someone starts a thread expressing amazement that she’s still alive, and she holds on for almost exactly 13 more years, is pretty awesome.

I had no idea until The Dope mentioned her that anyone outside the UK had even heard of her.

I’m listening to local radio. Have counted six Vera Lynn songs so far.

Think I’ll go watch Dr Strangelove in her memory.

(hell, if it wasn’t for The Wall I wouldn’t even know who she was…)

I’m guessing at least 90% of non-U.K. residents know of her only because of Pink Floyd.
