It’s living room redo time at Casa de Rick.
Bought the big screen, and therefore we have to replace the wall unit, so the new one will fit.
Near one corner of the wall is a switch for the patio light. The light itself is motion activated, but every once and a while we do want to turn it on or off for some reason. (if it gets real windy, the damn light goes on and off all night due to the trees in the yard)
The problem is the new wall unit will cover this switch completely. I am not in the mode to crawl under the house to move the wiring.
Short of drilling a hole in the back of the new wall unit, can anyone think of a way to make this a remote switch some how?
The easiest answer is X10 - go to Radio Shack or on the web at smarthome.com
I’d go with this from X10.
These are the questions which generate debate in a group of electrical inspectors.
Is the wall unit free standing, and able to be moved without requiring tools? The issue is one of accessability: Article 100 Definitions (NEC 2008)
Article 404.8 (A)
As such, physically blocking ready access to a switch with furniture which isn’t readily movable would be a code violation, IMO.
Are you going to tell?
I can appreciate the code, but my house is 50 years past final.
Well on the other side of this coin we have these these things called earthquakes so any tall furniture is screwed to the walls.
What is on the other side of the wall the switch is in? Could you just cut a new box in and move the switch to the backside of the existing location? Or would that be too weird of a location for a switch…
If you just need to move the switch a couple of feet to the edge of the wall unit, you can do that easily with on-wall raceway.
