Home Pizza Kits

In the thread on Favorite Chain Pizza I asked this question and have yet to get a reply in that thread. Rather than make a nuisance of myself there, since kits weren’t a main issue there, I’ll ask straight out here.

I have tried to locate a reference online to Pepe’s Pizza Kits, with no success. I admit that the Pepe’s part may be a brain fart, and that perhaps it’s been so long since the brand was in use that there’s no online mention of it.

Do you have any experiences with such a thing?

I doubt the Pepe’s kits being sold in Tennessee had anything to do with the famous Pepe’s Pizzeria in New Haven, CT, but I could be wrong there.

When I was a kid, we sometimes made our own pizza from a supermarket kit (Chef Boyardee? Pillsbury?). It was OK, but nothing special. A few times we made it starting with a ball of raw pizza dough we bought from a local pizzeria (for a buck or two). Or you can of course make it entirely from scratch.

Well, honestly, that’s not a question in the other thread, more of a statement.

As to this thread, no, never heard of 'em. Sounds straight out of 1978, though…

You’re right about the question: try this post instead. I can see how that may have been confusing. My bad.

Chef Boyardee still makes their pizza kits:

My mom used to make pizza using that kit as a base a few times a year. I’ve done it a few times myself. However, we’d always add toppings (usually sausage and pepperoni) and mozzerella cheese; the “sprinkle cheese” that they provide in the box just isn’t sufficient, IMO. But, the crust mix and the sauce are both pretty good.

Hmmm…haven’t made one of these in a long, long time…getting a craving now…

One of the local schools had a pizza kit sale as a fund raiser. IIRC it was from Pizza Hut. Contained frozen crust, cheese, sauce, and pepperoni. Not too bad at all.

with my food issues I cant have regular pizza. My aunt turned me on to this pizza mix (dough) from PCC ( I think) markets, it is everything free and appears to be made from magical pixie dust but once you mix it up with a bit of water and oil its really really good. I just hit the salad bar for toppings. grab some goat cheese/bacon/hot Italian sausage and its good to go.

not quite a kit but not hard to do either.

Pillsbury makes premade pizza crusts - we buy the thin and crispy (which is fairly new) then use Pastorelli canned pizza sauce on it and shredded cheese. Husband has a ball taking sausage from the meat department making little sausage balls for his pizza - he does designs, and sometimes the most perfect circles.

Me, I dump cheese on mine. Period. Mozzarella and Cheddar.

SHHH - don’t let Lynn Bodoni hear I said that!

You don’t really need a pizza kit…

Jiffy makes a fantastic pizza dough that you just add hot water to, mix, let sit for 5 min, then roll and shape and spin into a fantastic crust (Best part? It’s 79 cents!). Sauce comes in cans if you don’t want to make your own, and cheese, pepperoni, etc., are ready to go.

My kids love when we make pizza - just make sure you have some flour around…than dough is super sticky when you go to knead it!
