I have a DLP HDTV with a DVI input, theoretically giving me the highest possible digital signal reproduction. I do have a computer-based DVD player with a DVI out, but a number of logistical issues make it impractical for the TV to be the computer monitor.
Anyone here have experience with a DVD player with a DVI out? Is there a noticeable improvement?
Also, I have a very complex switching routine to change my video and audio sources that I want to simplify. I have too many high resolution sources for the available inputs, and I’m looking for an AV switcher that will handle all of the following:
RF Antenna
DVD Player - Component or DVI output; digital audio optical link or RCA digital out
HD Receiver box- Component or DVI output; digital audio optical link or RCA digital out
HD Cable box - Component or DVI output; digital audio optical link or RCA digital out
VHS player - Antenna or RCA NTSC video out; 2xRCA audio out.
Stereo receiver -digital audio optical link or RCA digital out
My TV has one input where you can choose between DVI or component video input, and another component only input. My Home theater receiver has 4 AV ins, but none of them are for higher than SVHS resolution. So I’d like the TV and amplifier boxes to be left set to a single path if possible, and find an intermediate box to handle all the routing. Particularly important are at least 3 sets of HD inputs.
This is probably a better question for General Questions than here.
I just bought a new reciever last week and went through A/V connection hell myself, and I am still trying to get the damned woofer to work.
You seem to have a crapload of high performance connection issues to deal with and my only advice would be to Google switcher boxes and see what you come up with, or go to your local electronics megastore and try to find a geek who knows what the hell he is talking about and explain your situation.
Good luck…and while you are there, ask if there is a reason why my woofer won’t work…
I have a Samsung DLP TV and I also have the Samsung DVD player with the DVI out. AFAI could see, there was not a huge gain in having the DVI run from the DVD to the TV. I am currently running the DVD player from the Component cables and use the DVI output from my satellite receiver in order to get the best possible HD picture.
Once HD DVD hits the market, TV’s will probably need two DVI inputs.
Have you also watched your HD signal through component connectors? Was there a noticeable improvment switching that from component to DVI? Frankly, from comments I’ve seen on other boards DVD players with DVI out, there are some quality issues, particularly with images with many dark shades, that have kept me from upgrading.
I did not hook up the component cables to the HD signal. I’ve only used the DVI cable for the HD signal since the DVI cable carries the raw digital signal, there should be no degredation in the image, and with the amont of data in HD, it seemed like the thing to do.
The first movie that I watched from the DVD player with the DVI cable was the superbit version of Johnny Mnemonic, which is fairly dark. There were some issues, but they were mainly due to the fact that the TV hadn’t been calibrated correctly. I would recommend that you get a THX mastered DVD (Jurassic Park or AotC for example) and follow the video calibration section. It is easier and quicker than any of the home theater calibration DVDs on the market, and the difference in quality is readily noticable.
