Home Theater Setup Questions

  1. should I hook the DVD S-Video up to the TV directly or through the S-Video on the Receiver. Does it matter?

  2. I have digital optical connection for the DVD player. Should I use a two channel connection (left/right…white/red) or three (left/right/video…white/red/yellow) with it?

  1. Depends on how good the S-Video switcher is in your receiver. As a general rule, it’s always best to keep the number of connections and circuits in the connection to a minimum, so plugging directly into your TV is technically the best solution. However, the difference may be completely invisible to your eyes, in which case you should just do what’s most convenient. A lot will depend on the TV you have - if it’s just a regular old 27" set or something, you probably won’t see a difference in any case. On the other hand, I have a 106" screen with a front projector, and I can notice very subtle differences in signal quality.

  2. The digital output IS the audio, so you can ignore the other audio outputs. Basically, if you have an optical input on your receiver, just plug the optical out into that, and plug your video out into the TV or receiver, and you’re off to the races.

I didn’t quite understand something in the second part - are you saying that your DVD player has a set of L/R audio jacks, AND a set of three jacks labelled L/R/Video? That makes no sense.
