How do I hook up an S-cord on my home theater system?

We have a new home theater system with a dvd player and are stymied by the S-cord thing. When hubby hooked it up we didn’t get any sound from the tv. I was under the impression that the tv would also come from the speakers. Would the only time we would hear the tv be when there’s a dvd playing? Is this going to be so hard to figure out that we should just hire someone to do it for us? We hate to do that. Seems like a stereo shouldn’t outwit us.

The S-Video connection carries video information only; it doesn’t carry the audio track. There should be separate audio outputs on the DVD player–depending on the type, there may just be standard RCA outputs (labeled “L” and “R”), or there may also be an output labeled “AC-3” and one labeled “Optical.” You’ll need to hook one of those outputs into an output on your receiver or amplifier to get the audio.

If you have a receiver with a built-in Dolby Digital and/or DTS decoder, use the AC-3 output; you will see an input on the receiver for “Digital Audio” or something of the like. This will give you full 5.1 digital audio. The RCA outputs will give you Dolby Surround, which is 2.1 audio.

Thank you both very much.
