Home weather station

I’ve read a lot of reviews but most people just want a pretty display and a clock. I’m looking for one that displays temp, dew point, daily and all-time records, barometric pressure trends and a remote sensor that lasts more than six months (not talking about battery life). Any recommendations?

I see these things at airports sometimes. (I’m talking about little private airports, where some pilot might take it upon himself to set one up.) You might want to look at some on-line pilot accessories shops, like Sporty’s. These are likely to provide more useful detail than you imagine those “pretty display and clock” do.

I won’t do your research for you, but here’s one possible page you could start with, showing some weather stations:

Many airports, including smaller ones, have an Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) that produces current weather reports, updated about once a minute. You can call them up on the telephone to listen. I know, this isn’t what you’re asking for, but you might find it interesting to hear what details they include. Here’s the phone number for Byron Airport, a medium-smallish public airport in the San Francisco Bay Area: 925-634-0906.

I have an Ambient Weather WS-2000 and very happy with it. It was a replacement for a different brand that annoyed me.

This system has outdoor and indoor temps, barometer, dewpoint, rain gauge, and solar radiation. They recently added sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset chart. I think it supports another 8 sensors, including particulate, soil moisture, and additional indoor/outdoor temperatures if you want to watch different parts of the house.

It is pretty straightforward to connect to your home wifi and it also maps to several online sites if you want to feed data to those as well.

Here’s everything but the indoor data to give you an idea of what it reports.

Here’s the buying guide from Weather Underground.

Strongly second this recommendation, I replaced a Davis Instruments last fall with this model. The old one was OK but did not have the connectivity of the WS-2000.

Here’s my nation reported through Weather Underground

Make that Station, not Nation. Damn auto correct!

I once had a very nice one from Oregon Scientific. And the batteries lasted a couple years.

Thanks for the question. I am a severe WX spotter, and it would be nice to report metered wind speed.
